[Update] State Police Identify 29-year-old Scarsdale Man in Tappan Zee Bridge Incident

Update 11:20 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2014: From the New York State Police: "The victim involved in an apparent suicide from the Tappan Zee Bridge on April 9, 2014, has been identified as 29-year-old Karl E. Peterson, of Scarsdale, NY." 

Original story: New York State Police Wednesday retrieved the body of an unnamed person who jumped from the Tappan Zee Bridge in what authorities are calling an "apparent suicide."

Details about the individual are being held, pending notification of next of kin, but the incident began at about 5:18 a.m. when police began receiving calls about a possible jumper on the bridge.

The On Wednesday April 9, 2014 at approximately 5:18 a.m., The New York State Thruway Communications Center began receiving calls of a possible jumper from the Tappan Zee Bridge.

State Troopers and members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to the bridge and began their investigation.  The Westchester County Police Department, Tarrytown Fire Department along with the Tappan Zee Bridge Constructors also responded to assist with an area search. 

The body of the jumper was located on a concrete bridge structure near the water’s surface.

The body was recovered by State Police utilizing Tappan Zee Bridge Constructors marine units along with Westchester County Police and the Tarrytown Fire Department.  The body was transported to an area near the Tarrytown Marina and removed by the Westchester County Medical Examiner. 

At this time State Police are continuing the investigation.  More details will be provided as the information becomes available, and family notification is made.
