New 'Gone Girl' Clip: See Nick Woo a Skeptical Amy

With a meet this cute, what could possibly go wrong? A new clip from the David Fincher’s adaptation of Gillian Flynn’s bestselling thriller Gone Girl landed online yesterday, and it shows the movie’s central couple, Nick and Amy (Ben Affleck and Rosamund Pike) enjoying happier times before those pesky murder allegations.

We see a suave Nick approach our title character, presumably at a New York City party, and insist upon knowing who the blonde beauty is. Amy coolly gives him a cheeky multiple choice quiz that’s ostensibly charming, but overlaid with an ominous vibe, and a hint at Amy’s deep dissatisfaction with being someone who “writes personality quizzes for magazines.” When Nick matches her beat for beat, Amy asks him who he is. He replies, “I’m the guy that’s going to save you from all this awesomeness.”

It’s a good line — wry, confident, and more than a little smarmy. It also reminds us of the powers and perils of Affleck’s onscreen charm that so won over Fincher. As the director told Playboy recently"In Gone Girl there’s a smile the guy has to give when the local press asks him to stand next to a poster of his missing wife. I flipped through Google Images and found about 50 shots of Affleck giving that kind of smile in public situations. You look at them and know he’s trying to make people comfortable in the moment, but by doing that he’s making himself vulnerable to people having other perceptions about him.”

Audiences will see just how vulnerable Nick gets when the movie opens on Oct. 3.
