iPads and iPhones to get bigger screens?

The Wall Street Journal has reported that officials at Apple’s Asian suppliers have said that Apple is currently testing bigger screens for its iPad and iPhone products. The new sizes include iPhone screens larger than four inches, and iPad screens that are 12.9 inches diagonally.

It’s not clear whether these will be the final screen sizes in future iPads and iPhones, however, as Apple goes through much iteration before settling on the design of new products according to details revealed in last year’s Samsung vs. Apple lawsuit. The most likely explanation is that the requests Apple’s Asian suppliers have received for new screen sizes from the Cupertino, California-based company are nothing more than part of that process.

At the very least, this news shows that Apple is considering different sizes for iPads and iPhones, and might be working towards giving its customers a more diverse range to choose from should new products sporting bigger screens prove to meet the company’s high standards.

Samsung, Apple’s main rival, is employing a strategy of creating consumer electronics for every single type of customer, and it’s paying off. In 2012 Samsung overtook Apple as the world’s top ‘smart connected device vendor’, and Apple’s consideration of bigger screens for its iPads and iPhones may indicate a change in strategy intended to recapture that lost crown.

What do you think? Are bigger screens something you’d like to see in future iPads and iPhones, or should Apple stick with its existing formula?
