St. Bonaventure Uses Strong Second Half to Defeat Men's Basketball, 85-73

Allen Hits 1,000 Points; Men's Basketball Falls at George Washington, 66-58

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Bryon Allen surpassed 1,000 career points on Sunday, but the George Mason men's basketball team could not overcome George Washington, falling 66-58 in Washington, D.C.

Mason used 16 GW turnovers for 20 points, but the Colonials converted 14 offensive rebounds into 19 second chance points on the afternoon. Sherrod Wright led Mason with 16 points, followed closely by Allen with 14. Erik Copes pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Mason despite GW out-rebounding the Patriots, 39-34. Mason finished the game 11-for-14 from the charity stripe to GW's 16-of-29 effort. For the game, GW shot 42.9 percent from the field including a 42.1 percent clip (8-19) from three-point range. Mason shot 37.9 percent and was 3-for-16 from long range.

The teams kept it close in the first half with seven lead changes and two tied scores as GW took the 26-24 advantage at the free throw line with four seconds left. It was a tale of runs in the first half as GW, trailing by five, capitalized on a six-plus minute scoring drought from the field by the Patriots to take a 17-14 advantage with 6:05 to play. Marko Gujanicic snapped the run to spark six unanswered from the Patriots as Mason regained the 20-17 lead with 4:16 to go. GW would tie the game twice in the final minutes before taking the narrow advantage at the free throw line to end the half.

Maurice Creek opened the second half hitting back-to-back-to-back triples, handing the Colonials a 35-24 lead with less than two minutes expired off the clock. Jalen Jenkins would jumpstart an 11-2 Mason spurt to pull the Patriots within two at 41-39. The Colonials responded with a 16-4 run of their own to take its largest lead of 14 points, 57-43, with 3:38 remaining. Mason would cut the score to seven on three occasions as GW closed out the victory from the free throw line.

The Patriots wrap up this two-game road swing visiting La Salle on Thursday, March 6. Tip is slated for 8 p.m. in Philadelphia on NBCSN.
