LEE McCulloch added a neat bit of trivia to his wikipedia page at the weekend – but the
Rangers skipper insists he’s not too bothered about what goes on his own CV.

The Gers midfielder is destined to become a pub quiz question after finding the scoresheet against Dumbarton in the Championship last Saturday.

He’s now the first Rangers player to score in all four divisions in Scotland as well as all of the
cup competitions.

It’s a cool stat, although admittedly one he would prefer not to have as it would have meant the Ibrox club had avoided their period of exile from the top flight.

It is what it is, though, and he’ll take the record anyway.

But he’s far more concerned with what goes on the Rangers wiki page. Mainly getting out of the
Championship and back to the top table – and adding some silverware along the way.

McCulloch said: “It’s great to have that record but it’s not about personal glory this season. It’s about doing well in the cups and getting up the league, winning this title.

“That is first and foremost the target, winning the league, and anything we do in the cups is a definite bonus.

“But that wee personal thing is something nice to have. It’s good to know.

“I didn’t know it. And, to be honest, I’m not the type who keeps tabs on these sorts of things. I’ve scored in a few competitions in England, too, but I couldn’t tell you them all.

“As I said, though, it’s all about the team. We have to be team players, all of us, and we’ve picked up some momentum in the past couple of games.”

The Gers squeezed past Queen’s Park in the League Cup on Tuesday to set up a second round clash with Inverness – with Falkirk awaiting the winners in the next stage.

It wasn’t exactly convincing at the Spiders’ temporary home at Airdrie but the only thing that mattered was the result.

McCulloch said: “The game against Queen’s Park was a bit scrappy but we got the job done. I thought the strikers did really well and, on another day, we could have had five or six.

“Their goalie made a great save from me early on and had a few others over the course of the game.

“I thought we dominated the game without really flattering.”

The narrow win sets up a tasty test against Caley Thistle at Ibrox. The high-flying Highlanders thumped Rangers 3-0 at the same venue in the League Cup two seasons ago when the Govan men were starting their rise back from the bottom.

But McCulloch reckons his side will be a far better match for the Caley Jags this time round.

He said: “I would say we’re in a much better place, definitely. The younger boys who played that night obviously have the experience of games – and we’ve added players who have improved us, made us better and given us a bigger squad.

“So we’re definitely in a better place than we were then.

“They’re a good team with a good manager so it will be tough.

“They’ve had a couple of good results. They beat Celtic at the weekend and they have a few good players. Is the wee striker Billy Mckay away yet? No? There’s maybe time, because he’s a good player.

“Seriously, they’ve got a few good players so it’s going to be a tough game for us. But the most important thing now is Saturday against Queen of the South, It’s a home game, they’ve had extra time in midweek and we need to win, as always.”

McCulloch has played in almost every position for Gers apart from between the sticks but he’s relishing his recent run in the engine room.

He said: “I love playing in midfield. It’s different again but I enjoy playing in there alongside Nicky Law, getting a couple of goals and assists.

“The legs aren’t a problem in there, it’s just about keeping form. I’m one of the fittest in the team so it’s no problem to play that position.”

McCulloch is also revelling in the thrill of competition. Rangers have been able to coast to promotion in the last two years but the cut-throat Championship means the side need to be on their game every week.

He said: “It’s great having a title race. It’s what this club is about.

“As long as we go and win it. Hearts and Hibs, possibly Falkirk as well, will all be vying for first and second place.

“As long as we keep the momentum going, keep picking up points, we can win the league.”
