How to remove my phone number from iMessage?

I returned my 4s. Got tired of waiting for the jailbreak and that the jailbreak is going to be much harder and almost near impossible in the future.

So... I got myself another phone.

People that have iOS5 (my wife) can't text me because it keeps sending messages via imessage which i don't have anymore. Is there a way that I can remove my number from the registered imessage so people with iOS5 can text me correctly via SMS?

One: you can't ever know that for sure.

Two: before returning your iPhone, you should have turned off iMessage. That way the Apple servers know to not use that number for iMessages.

I didn't turn it off... I just wiped it... I guess now I have to have a support conversation and after the 300th email they might solve it.

Did you ever sort this out? I returned my iphone and all my friends with iphones are still trying to send messages to me through iMessage and I am not receiving them. I can't find a way to un-register my mobile number from iMessage.

My mom is having the same problem. Very frustrating. Tried a lot of things -- it seems to be an Apple server issue as I've completely deleted her contact and SMS thread (and signed in and out of iMessage) and still her number shows up as iMessage when I try to text her.

As was said, it's due to not deactivating iMessage, before switching to a different phone.

That's awesome, unfortunately it provides no help to actually fix the problem. Presumably if they could turn it off at this point in time they would do that.

And you are SOL if your phone is stolen.

Question: My brothers' iPhone was stolen, so if I understand correctly all iMessages sent to him still go to the iPhone that was stolen even though he isn't currently using an iPhone right now? Or would the iMessage setup be deactivated if the phone was restored?

Nevermind, saw the OP wiped his first phone.

This did not work for me. I have tried unregistering, changing my apple ID password, getting people to delete me as a contact, logging off of and turning off iMessage on my iMac. The only things I haven't tried are starting a new apple ID (because of the link to my iMac) and changing my phone number.
