Dr. Jan Emerson

"If your child is struggling, or if you want your child to advance more quickly, I can help. I know that as a tutor I can do what a teacher with 30 students in a classroom cannot do: I can tailor every lesson to the unique needs of each student. I teach students the academic, test taking and writing (short response, paragraph, essay), and executive functioning skills they need to improve scores and become better thinkers and writers. As a specialist in 4th-8th grade, I am familiar with public (ELA, Specialized High School), private (ISSE, SSAT), and parochial (COOP, HSPT, TACHS) entrance exams, as well as AATG German achievement tests. I have administered and graded state ELA tests, and helped design state language standards in Oregon."

Dr. Emerson earned a Ph.D. from Brown University in German, a Masters in Education from Pace University, a Masters in German with a concentration in Medieval Languages from the University of Massachusetts–Amherst, and a B.A. in English and German from Indiana University. She directed the German Language Program at the University of Oregon and taught at Reed College. She also taught for the NYCDOE, and has been among the most qualified private English tutors in Manhattan for the past six years.
