Building a bird feeder is a great all-ages project, and turns your yard into a visually stunning and environmentally friendly refuge. It’s easy too: all you need is an orange, some yarn or twine, and some birdseed.
Cut the orange in half and remove the insides (or just save the hollowed out orange halves from your next snack.) Poke four small holes across from each other near the top of the orange rind. Take a 24 inch piece of yarn and thread it through one set of holes, then use another piece to thread through the second set. You’ll end up with an “X” in the middle of the orange, like you should see in the image above.
Tie the two pieces together in a knot, which you’ll use to hang the feeder. Fill the halves with birdseed and put it up in a tree or on a stand in your yard. Once the birdseed is all gone, you can refill it, but when the oranges start to rot, simply toss the whole feeder in the compost pile (or the trash, if you don’t compost.).
