Also Found On: A Book and A Record

Requiem was a really good follow up. I felt like Requiem took the perfect spot as the middle book in a trilogy, it wrapped up nearly everything that happened in Providence, while setting up a strong background for what I assume will happen in Eden. So, what I liked about Requiem:
1. Jared. Question: will I ever get over Jared. Answer: No.
2. Claire. I have to admit, I really just love the Ryel family. Jared, Claire, and Bex are all such well rounded characters with such surprising personalities. I really enjoyed Claire stepping forward into the spotlight in this one. Her interactions with Ryan were also so hilarious, and the straightforwardness gives such a breath of fresh air compared to Jared’s drawn out explanations.
3. Beth. Beth is basically the best, best friend a girl could ask for. She just accepts Nina for who she is, and accepts all of her excuses for not being at work (and they are good excuses). She understands Nina’s job probably better than Nina does (like any fantastic assistant/bff) And she is such a great balance for Nina’s personality. Rarely does she have any massive freak out moments.
4. The dreams. They added just what I wanted for this story, a little bit of heart pounding mystery. Anyone who knows me knows that I scare easy, and these night terrors of Nina’s really made my heart go double time. It’s also nice whenever I get to see Gabe. Jared, being one of my favorite characters, seems to take a lot from his dad, so getting to see the way Gabe acted/reacted was pretty awesome. Also, there is another someone that has dreams from Gabe and I found that little tidbit to be cute and heartbreaking all at once. Love.
What I had a hard time with in this one.
1. It still felt like Nina was a little bit hung up on Ryan. I understand that she feels bad about certain choices he makes, but girlfriend, come on. You’re hurting your fiancé over a dude that is kind of a jerk, and also a consenting adult who is old enough to make his own decisions. It’s strange because in Providence, I felt like Ryan didn’t have a chance, however in Requiem the Nina/Ryan relationship somehow seemed stronger (at least in the beginning).
2. Sasha. Sasha felt like a bulk character to me. I kept waiting for her to do something truly heinous (involving Shax or another demon) but she didn’t. As a matter of fact she kind of faded into the background, maybe she’ll have a bigger role in Eden? Who knows, but in this one she was kind of a loose cannon and my mind kept wandering to what she would do next instead of focusing on the story at hand.
All in all, I really enjoyed Requiem, as I mentioned before it fulfills the duty held by most middle books in a trilogy, and reads similar to Providence (though I felt Providence was a sort of whirlwind, and Requiem was a little more peaceful pacing-wise) Although there were some scenes in which I kind of lost some steam (being in the middle east, I just really don’t like Ryan with Nina. Ugh.) Again, four pies because I’m literally hungering to get my hands on Eden!

If I were in an alternate universe, I think I would have really liked to get into Brown University. According to this book, you don't need o study, ever, you can go MIA in some other country for a few months and come back to resume studies like nothing ever happened and no questions asked, and you can be one serious demon ass-kicker and still get a four-point-oh GPA without even trying.

Either that or the characters in the story must be really smart. Freaking smart. Like some Einstein genius. As if their smartness is so freaking.

Funny, from Nina's actions when it comes to saving the world and preserving the delicate balance between heaven and hell, it seems to me otherwise - that she is just one big helpless bimbo, who needs saving all the time.

Besides Nina, Jared is also one unlikable character. A highly-paid personal bodyguard/babysitter/stalker/personal slave, Jared seems to never tire of Nina's antics and whiny demands. But Jared himself is one whiny fella too, with some serious needy clingy issues. Which girl would ever want a guy who needs someone to boost his ego 24/7 by assuring that he is the girl's pretty bouncy bubbly bunny boy? Eck.

Nevertheless, I gave this book a rather high rating because despite listening to the characters scrounging and complaining about being apart for even two days and making out, I found Requiem mildly entertaining. Some parts were a bit scary too. Like when someone with supersharp senses says, "They're coming!" (if you can guess what they refers to), it really heightens the suspense as the characters who are in the middle of something try to flee from "them". Get the picture?

If you are slightly interested in Requiem but put off by my review, I implore you to reconsider - read Requiem but for the sake of Claire. She is pow-wow awesome! Claire brings the definition of bad-ass to a whole new level. She fights, plays with guns, is ruthless and competitive, somewhat elusive when it comes to boys (fangirling!), can knock out the boys (including Jared) anytime, and that she had to work doubly hard initially to gain recognition as she was a girl should make Claire all the more idolized by female folks. Moreover, I love the fact that she too had moments of weakness and helplessness when even she couldn't keep up her usual smirk and attitude. The book would have been so much better if she were the main character. To better convince you of Claire's greatness, I'd like to bring in a snippet of conversation between Claire(the babysitter) and her Taleh (the baby).
“So you would literally take a bullet for me.”
“No,” Claire said, with zero emotion.
“No?” Claire's Taleh said, surprised at her answer.
Claire rolled her eyes, annoyed that she had to answer. “If I have time to stand in the way of a bullet, you have time to move.”

And I love Bex, the youngest sibling among the Ryels. He's adorable, obedient, caring and helpful, but unfortunately these qualities allow him to be trampled all over by Jared and used too often. I hope that one day in the third book he wakes up to realize what a jerk Jared has been to him.

All strengths and weaknesses considered, I have to admit I'm hooked to the series - and dying to know what happens next. I'll be picking up the third book in the very near future, no doubt.

Oh my. This was good. So very very good.
The Providence series are crack books, that's what they are. You get addicted to them and just want more and more and more. And more.
I didn't want to finish this one so fast so I tried to stay away. I really did. But the book didn't agree with me.
And I'm sorry but I can't sum up my emotions because right now I'm too high on awesomeness.. and this review will most likely turn out to be incoherent ramblings if I were to give it a try. Not a good idea if you ask me.
So, Requiem is awesome. Providence is awesome. This whole series is awesome and Jamie is amazing.
I'll just leave it at that.
Book 3, please be done soon.

Her işini başkası görüyor.

“Requiem” picks up right where “Providence” leaves off.
Nina and Jared are together and having dealt with the challenges left behind by her father following her death. Nina and Jared discover she is part of a prophecy that could upset the delicate balance between Heaven and Hell. The question becomes how to protect Nina and still run her Dad’s company and plan her wedding to Jared.
Very surprisingly I thought this sequel was better than “Providence”…not something I find happening very often, for sure.
Requiem still has all the mystery, romance, action and adventure of “Providence”, but the characters have grown so much since the last book. My only complaint would be that Nina is a bit “slow” in this book…it could be all the sleep-deprivation she is experiencing. There were times when the answer to a question was quite obvious, but Nina just couldn’t or wouldn’t grasp it.
Can’t wait for the next installment!

3.5 stars!***

Still good, but not as good as the first book. Sometimes it was overly dramatic but it was balanced with cute, mushy scenes.

Nina and Jared are stronger than ever. With Ryan gone in an army, Jared doesn't have a rival anymore and he doesn't feel so afraid and teritorial anymore. But there are other problems. Nina can't sleep because her dreams are filled with her dead father dying over and over again.

There is a book out there, but it is belong to a devil himself. And they have to get it. Because without it Nina's life might be in danger.

Sometimes I felt like some dramatic scenes were too forced. And other times some things were almost ignored or brushed off.

Jared is still as handsome, cute and amazingly good with words as ever. And stubborn.

Hopefully the next one will get better, but I have a feeling that it won't - that it'll be even more forced and full of fillers and redundant scenes.

Ok. So I loved the first one and I still love Jared and Nina in this one. In fact I’m starting to really appreciate and love all the characters in this novel. However, Jamie McGuire has stepped outside of just Angels and Demons and into religion in this novel. I’m a little scared to read the next one because when it comes to religion it’s generally a subject that I think writers should try to avoid or tread lightly. I know, I know. How can you someone write about angels and demons but not write about religion but some manage to...her first book did. So I’m just a bit hesitant t continue. If you’ve read the book you probably understand the exact part of this novel that I’m referring to.
Anyhow, religion aside I still loved the book. I loved the characters, even though Nina was a lot crankier in this novel but I guess getting 4 hours of sleep a night would do that to you. Not to mention the life style they live. And once again McGuire did have me on the edge of my seat saying “No, no, no. Please don’t let that happen.” She does know how to tug on your heartstrings.
Not to mention I was ecstatic when something I predicted in the first novel actually happens in the second (mainly Ryan’s involvement in everything). Now if only my predications about why Bex can sense demons and others more than the others comes to I will be set and laughing my evil laugh.
Good:
Nina: She’s finally learning to stop standing behind Jared and stand with him. She can somewhat kick butt too. A little
Jared: As always sexy, protective. Sigh.
Ryan: I’m really starting to enjoy Ryan now. In the first novel I thought he was annoying and should just move out of the way. Not so much anymore. Not to mention this kid ends up in the hospital a lot!
Claire: She’s starting to relax. And I’m starting to like her
Bex: You crafty little bugger you. You’re going to end up being the strongest and greatest of the siblings aren’t you? And probably for good reason.
Bad:
I kind of got a whole Twilight feeling about this series. Mainly the love triangle and why Nina and Ryan were actually close in the first place. Not to mention what I think will happen in the next book with Bex. Feeling a little twilightly. That and the religion thing. I hope she treads lightly and doesn’t do anything too drastic with religion in the next book. It tends to be a touchy subject with a lot of people.

Better than its predecessor and a lot of fun!
4.5 stars

Requiem is the second book in the planned Providence trilogy by self-published author, Jamie McGuire. While I thoroughly enjoyed Providence, I think this second installment is even better than its predecessor.

Requiem picks up right where Providence left off. Nina has been recuperating from an injury sustained at the end of Providence, that the love of her life, and protector, Jared could not protect her from. In addition to that, Nina has been having horrible nightmares about the death of her father, Jack. However, Nina soon learns that there is a reason for the nightmares, Jack and his own guardian and protector, Gabe, are trying to tell her something.

While Providence was about Nina discovering Jared and (quickly) falling in love, Requiem is a continuation of their love, and of their story, and the reason for Nina needing protection. Providence was a little slow for me, I found myself waiting and waiting for something to happen. Requiem was loaded with much more action, mysteries presented and revealed. It was much more fast paced.

The "twists" and mysteries that were revealed, I feel could have been revealed in a slower manner, or perhaps with a bit more mystery behind them. It was almost too quick how we would learn a secret about a character, out of the blue. I would have liked a little bit more intrigue than what we were given.

The highlights of this book, as with Providence (and McGuire's awesome Beautiful Disaster) come from McGuire's characters and the way she develops the relationships between them. I absolutely love Nina and Jared as a couple. He is her protector, true, but his love for her is so palpable in McGuire's writing, that I felt I could feel the emotions that they (literally) share. McGuire definitely knows how to write about relationships and the dialog is spot on. I really enjoyed this book and am sad that I have to wait a couple of months for the 3rd and final installment. I remain impressed that a self-published author can turn out such great quality books. Thanks Jamie!

Jamie McGuire is 3 for 3, another great read. After reading Providence, I could not wait for the sequel. Requiem did not disappoint. I loved the addition of Bex as a main character; his angel side is mature way beyond his years while his human side is your typical 13 year old boy. It was also great to see Nina throw away her damsel in distress title and get in the fight. Jared also changes in that he stands his ground alot more with Nina. In Providence, I made the comment that sometimes Jared appears to be a little whipped; in Requiem he does not succumb to Nina's every want and whim. He actually is pretty stubborn and stands his ground if he feels that what he's doing is in her best interest. Overall a great read. My only complaint was that the plot got a little too far out there at times and there was almost too much going on. It also moved quite fast; I don't mean that as a negative aspect of the book, but I blinked and Sophomore year was over.

I absolutely love these characters especially Nina and Jared. Their relationship is full of mind...no, heart blowing romance!!! My favorite part of this book has to be the direction and development she took with her characters. Though I didn't think it was possible, I loved them even more the second time around. This is a great series that I highly recomend. Can't wait for book 3 :-)

Much better than the original - though Im not sure if that means anything. I doubt I would have bothered to read this if I hadn't gotten the entire trilogy on Kindle for $2.99, bc I really thought the 1st book was awful.

There was a real plot this time, and it was actually fairly interesting, if not exactly original. It helped that the book wasn't 100% focused on the "romance" between Jared and Nina, as that has got to be one of the creepiest, most boring love stories in YA Wannabe Land.

However, I have one humongous complaint: Have these people never heard of condoms? You just been told that you might create a baby that will upset the balance between heaven and hell, and you want to use the rhythm method?? What is this, 1952?

Some well placed commas and not capitalizing 'sweetheart','dear' and 'son' would really go a long way to making the writing far less flat and clunky. (Isn't that Grammar 101??) Even so, it was still better than Providence. I hope Ms. McGuire has invested in an editor for her later books.

Jared a Claire trošku vyrovnali skóre IQ.. I když.. Ne.. Jen Claire..
.. když nebudu brát v potaz časté skličující momenty těchto vcelku psychicky nevyrovnaných postav, tak se mi příběh poměrně líbil, obzvláště díky vedlejším postavám *wink wink*..

It still reminds me a great deal of Twilight, but it still doesn't bother me. This one does have a lot of religion in it, but again, that doesn't bother me. I just know some people might not be keen on that. I think I love all the characters even more now.

I really liked this one.. The action and suspense really picked up in this 2nd book of the series. Cannot wait to find out what happens to them all in Eden. Ok, off now to start book 3!

Eeehhhh....I don't really know how to rate this-It wasn't good and it wasn't bad. It was just..ok-and that makes me sad becuase after the first, I figured the intensity would only pick up. Instead, it goes into great detail about Nina's history and the history of...well....I suppose religion? I wouldn't know because suffice to say, I skimmed at least 50% of this novel-I know, tsk tsk. I just couldn't get into the story. Which sucks. A lot.

I love Claire, and I love Jared. I even love Ryan(now), but even these great characters couldn't save this heavy-in-religious-history novel. I just felt bored the whole time. Near the end I will give it kudos, because all of Nina's dreams finally seem to come in handy when the action ensues-brief, but thorough action.

Lastly, I am going to say I don't know why there is so much love for this Kim character. I disliked her in the first and I loathed her in the second. She is a very obnoxious, in-your-face annoying character. Just because she is a little in the know in the second does not give her more of a right to be even snarkier. That's all I will say on her character.

All in all an ok novel, just not really a novel I would recommend to those around me. If it weren't for Jared I doubt I would finish the third and final installment in the series, but I am an avid reader through and through, and I will finish this series...eventually. I would rather start others on my TBR list before I come back to Eden, which says a lot :/ I never separate series if I don't have to. Some will love it, some will hate it-guess you'll have to read to figure out which one of those categories you are.

Amazing!!!!!! Requiem picked up right where Providence left off. You find out that Nina's life is changed completely after Jared & her makes the decision to be together. There was always something exciting going on. I couldn't put this book down and when I had to put my fantasy world on hold to deal with reality I couldn't wait to get back to the story so I could find out what happens next. I love the way Jared loves Nina so much that he would do anything and everything to protect her. This book was better than the first book and I thought the first was great. This book didn't disappoint me. I can't wait to jump into the third book.

Bex and a levitation possession scene. That is five stars right there (And that’s not even my favourite scene). Everything else was icing on the cake.
It builds really well for the final showdown in the series end and still manages to give you a balance of their lives as well. But all I really needed was some Bex scenes to be happy.

In requiem the story follows Nina and Jareds love story as it continues to unfold. With Nina having strong night mares and Jared learning it is worse when he is around, he sets off to find answers to help his beloved..

This story keeps getting better. Still my favorite series and wish it would be made into a movie and mini series or a tv show for like starz or HBO.

This, actually, was pretty good. But, IMO, you lose a star for writing a book about angels and demons and quoting “Revelations”. RevelatuonS? THERE IS NO “S” ON IT. I find that so annoying. It is the book of Revelatiom. Singular. If you’re going to quote it, freaking LOOK at it. Literally, look at it. Any and all translations. There is NO “S”.

Honestly, that’s just a life pet peeve of mine. Hollywood always puts an S on it too. It’s called background research, people. Do it, or suffer the loss of stars.

Okay, so Jamie McGuire clearly decided to branch out with Requiem and try to take on something different. Beautiful Disaster was an amazingly touching love story and Providence took an all-encompasing love and threw it in the middle of some dark and mysterious events. I was curious to see how the romance in Providence would play out in Requiem without growing tired, but Jamie took me completely by surprise!! Requiem isn't just a continuation of this unforgettable love story that I fell head over heels for, in fact I feel like it was the polar opposite of Providence. Whereas Providence had Nina and Jared's steamy whirlwind romance with a slight threat of danger lurking in the background, Requiem throws all of the characters into the dead center of all the danger, to the point that there's little time for anything else. It was not at all what I expected, but I really think Jamie's choice paid off for this series!

Requiem finds Nina plagued by terrifying nightmares where Gabe and Jack are repeatedly being killed as she watches. Jared feels helpless to do something to help her, and she in the meantime is finding it more and more difficult to function. It was so sad to read about Nina literally just falling apart from endless nights with no sleep thanks to her dreams, and as the book goes on they got downright creepy. We're talking exorcist scene, crawling up the walls, creepy!! *shutters* WIth Claire protecting Ryan overseas, Jared and Bex are left to protect Nina and figure out a solution to her dreams on their own. Everywhere they turn they hit a dead end, and there doesn't seem to be a light at the end of the tunnel. When events force Ryan to return home and Claire can finally help, they discover that Nina is destined to play a pivotal role in the battle of good vs. evil. They set off to fight the evil forces to find the one book that may hold some answers, but it may not be enough; Nina may have to carry out her role, changing everything.

There was a LOT going on in the second half of this book, between new discoveries, the family secret threatening to be exposed to another, and the constant fight with their enemies. Jared and company find themselves having to recover from massive injuries on several occasions, which had me cringing. I didn't like reading that these characters I love so much were suffering! It definitely showed how strong and amazing the Ryels are, though, and I just so adore them! I did miss the steaminess between Nina and Jared, but I think it was great to see what was behind the danger that was eluded to in Providence. I wanted to slap Nina at times for dwelling on Ryan more than a devoted fiance of a super-sexy half-angel should be, but I LOVE the way Jamie has it panning out for the series. It all makes sense and brings things back full-circle. The ending of Requiem comes with a big bomb being dropped for Nina and Jared, and I so look forward to getting my hands on my copy of Eden in the mail!! Great series!!
