A 'Final Fantasy XIV' live-action TV show is in the works
Final Fantasy might be making its way to a screen near you, albeit without the need for you to have a controller in hand. Square Enix and Sony Pictures Television are developing a live-action Final Fantasy TV series with Hivemind, the production company behind The Expanse. It's also working on Netflix's adaptation of The Witcher.
The Marvel's Avengers game arrives May 15th, 2020
Back in 2017, Square Enix signed a multi-year development deal with Marvel. The first item on their list was a secretive title dubbed, Project Avengers. Tonight, at Square Enix's keynote ahead of E3, the company unveiled the results of its two years of hard work. Behold the newly anointed Marvel's Avengers.
Switch RPG 'Octopath Traveler' is coming to Android and iOS
Apparently, Square Enix doesn't believe Octopath Traveler is mobile enough. The developer has unveiled plans to bring the well-received Switch RPG to Android and iOS devices, in the form of a prequel, Octopath Traveler: Champions of the Continent. It'll preserve the signature mix of 3D environments with retro-style 2D characters, just with touchscreen-friendly controls. The team isn't shedding much light on the plot, but you'll play a 'Chosen One' who'll fight a horrific evil that has "fortune, power and fame."
'Kingdom Hearts' PlayStation VR experience launches tomorrow
Square Enix released a VR Kingdom Hearts experience for Japanese gamers in January, so where's the release for everyone else? Right around the corner, apparently. Sony has confirmed that Kingdom Hearts: VR Experience will be available on February 28th. The free PlayStation VR title serves as a sort of trip down memory lane, letting you relive key scenes from the Disney/Square crossover from Sora's perspective. This isn't a slice of familiar gameplay in 360 degrees, unfortunately, but it might spark some familiar emotions.
Scrapped 'Final Fantasy XV' DLC will live on as a novel
Square Enix left Final Fantasy XV fans hanging in the lurch when it scrapped most of the game's DLC, but that doesn't mean you'll be left wondering what happens next. The developer is borrowing a cue from Mass Effect: Andromeda by releasing a novel, The Dawn of the Future, to fill in what's left of the storyline. It promises to pick up where the Episode Ardyn add-on leaves off and will be available in Japan on April 25th, or just a month after Ardyn's March 26th debut.
'Dragon Quest XI' arrives on Switch this fall
Yes, it's true: Dragon Quest XI for the Switch is coming. Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age: Definitive Edition (phew) will be available sometime in the fall. As hinted earlier, it won't be a plain port. The trailer doesn't make mention of a possible ending change, but you will get to swap between the regular 3D mode and a retro 2D mode on the fly. You'll also hear a fully orchestrated soundtrack in battle and on the field, and you can choose between English and Japanese voices. If you were waiting to play DQXI on the Switch or just want a quintessential JRPG for Nintendo's hybrid console, this is likely to scratch your itch.
Sora is all about the 'gram in 'Kingdom Hearts 3'
In Kingdom Hearts 3, Sora gets an iPhone. Sorry, a "Gummiphone." The fictional handset was built by Chip and Dale (I like to think their company is called Acorn Computers) at Hollow Bastion, one of the fictional worlds dreamt up for the Disney-meets-Square-Enix mashup series. The Gummiphone allows Sora to call his friends and, conveniently, both deliver and receive plot-critical information while he travels with Donald and Goofy to distant worlds. It also takes pictures -- and oh boy, does Sora take a lot of pictures in Kingdom Hearts 3. At least, my version of the keyblade wielder does, anyway.
‘Kingdom Hearts 3’ brings you closer than ever to Disney’s worlds
People love Kingdom Hearts, the long-running Disney and Square Enix mashup, for a few reasons. There's the accessible and mesmerizing combat, which trades the turn-based roots of the Final Fantasy franchise for a frenetic blend of keyblade combos, summons and transformations. Some fans also enjoy the bizarre and, at this point, borderline nonsensical storyline concerning Sora, his friends and the eternal struggle between light and darkness. Others are simply enamored by the chance to explore their favorite Disney worlds with Donald Duck and Goofy. If you fall into the latter camp, good news: The Disney and Pixar-themed locales in Kingdom Hearts 3 are absolutely stunning.
'Dragon Quest XI' is coming to Switch, at least in Japan
You won't have to dig out your 3DS if you want to play Dragon Quest XI on a Nintendo console. Square Enix has announced that Dragon Quest XI S will reach the Switch sometime in 2019. The release has only been confirmed for Japan so far, although there are fewer barriers to an international launch now that the version with English voices is widely available on PS4 and Windows PCs.
'Kingdom Hearts 3' leaks six weeks early
It's not unheard of for games to reach players days before launch thanks to supply chain leaks, pirates or overeager retailers. Square Enix, however, is dealing with something considerably worse. The developer's Tetsyuo Nomura has confirmed that copies of Kingdom Hearts 3 are circulating roughly six weeks ahead of the game's January 29th debut. While Nomura didn't say how the Disney-tastic crossover RPG got loose, he did confirm that Square was "aware as to how this all happened."

Square Enix removes three mobile games in Belgium after loot box ban
Square Enix will no longer offer three of its mobile games in Belgium after the country banned loot boxes this year. You'll no longer be able to pick up Mobius Final Fantasy, Kingdom Hearts Union X or Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia in the nation.
