Sam opens the back door and steps off the porch and down to the garden. The automatic porch light flicks on with a soft yellow glow. The grass is cold under his bare feet. It tickles a bit too, but Sam doesn’t mind. He comes to a stop in front of the garden and reaches out for the tulip petal. His fingertips brush across the petals, and they’re silky smooth, fragile, and delicate in a way that most things in Sam’s life aren’t.
The quiet of night is that special kind of stillness where it feels quiet, but it’s actually quite loud with the crickets chirping and the woods near Dean and Cas’s house alive with sounds. It’s still in a way that Sam has never known how to be himself.

All humans wanted angels, but few could afford them. They were the best designer pets. They could pose as cats, dogs, humans, snakes, or anything else, and the best thing about them, they were the most loyal, nurturing companions and would go to the ends of the earth to protect their owner.
Sam Winchester was a student at Stanford University studying to get his law degree, and he had two angels of his own named Dean and Castiel. His parents bought them for him when he was eleven. Pet angels and their humans created deep, soul-level bonds over time that allowed Dean and Castiel to read his emotions, and Sam, when he was in a desperate enough situation, could access their powers for himself. As well as that, Dean and Castiel were born to serve forever, and as soon as Sam died, they would pass too and watch over their master for the rest of eternity in Heaven or Hell, but until then, they were immortal. Their biggest job was to protect Sam.
Sam loved his angels as if they were his brothers, but Castiel and Dean secretly loved each other romantically, and the continued building of sexual tension between them was starting to drive poor Sam crazy. He knew he needed to do something.
