Inspired by the ciclovías of Bogotá, Colombia, open street events are growing in popularity around the world. Here’s a survey of nine events from around the world that close streets to cars and open them up to humans.
Alissa Walker writes for Gizmodo about nine open streets events from all over the world, even in a few cities famous for auto domination. “Although these interventions are usually temporary, open streets often lead to real-world change: These small-scale activations often help residents to envision a city designed to promote walking and biking year-round,” writes Walker.
Included in the number are events in Los Angeles and Atlanta—to name two famously car-centric American cities. Walker also mentions open street days in cities like Paris, Mexico City, and Tel-Aviv (although that last one is a slightly different take on the open streets phenomenon), among others.
