It’s been over two years since DCI John Luther last graced our screens, and it’s fair to say that the anticipation for his return has been pretty damn high ever since.

In that period of absence, Idris Elba has managed an Oscar-nominated turn as Nelson Mandela, an appearance in the Avengers: Age of Ultron and he’s even recorded a role for Finding Dory (must see film of 2016, btw).

But now, he’s taking on the role of the grizzled detective once more, and he’s decided to offer us a sneak peak of what to expect.

Posting on Twitter, the actor wrote ‘#LuthersBack…soon’, alongside a photo of his character looking particularly forlorn on a clifftop.

It comes shortly after BBC America offered us this sneak peak of the detective in action, getting to grips with yet another criminal.

And it’s all got people very, very, excited.

‘Idris, I have waited for this moment for a very long time. Thank you’, one fan wrote.

‘You sir, have made my day, nay, my year’, another added.

However, the most important response came from the user who replied ‘I need a date’ – referencing the show’s yet to be announced airdate.

Either way, it can’t be too far away, right?

Luther

Welcome back John, we’ve missed you.

Luther returns to BBC One later this year with a miniseries which will feature two one-hour episodes.
