Prins Thomas

Prins Thomas’s favourite tracks

This article is more than 8 years old

Never mind the Balearics: disco DJ and Prins among men Thomas takes us through his set of cosmic 12s

The track I’ll be opening my next DJ set with
Wolf Müller: Rudeltanz

I like to keep all possibilities open, so either some swooshy laser, wind or fart sounds, or something cool and midtempo like this.

The best track by my favourite new artist

DJ Richard: Bane

DJ Richard is a new discovery, to me at least, and the track Bane is a standout on his new album. Nobody has handled “epic” in such a muted and delicate way in a long time.

The track I’d play to show off my eclectic tastes
Elvis Presley: It’s Now Or Never

I never play records for that reason alone but I’ve closed quite a few nights recently with this, which I guess fits the bill.

The track that should have been a crossover hit
Taro Tokugawa: Here My Dear

In an ideal world we would hear Taro Tokugawa’s Here My Dear on the radio. Describing it sounds like a big mess but whoever manages to incorporate banjos – or is that a samisen? – disco drums and melancholic 1960s pop samples into something whole and uplifting deserves A-listing on radio.

The track I wish I’d signed to my label
Harry Thumann: Underwater

That would involve a time machine set to 1980. Without a doubt the best futuristic disco track ever and a firm favourite for over 20 years.

The track I wish I’d never played

I regret nothing, but Toto’s Hold The Line, Deuce by Kiss and Bon Jovi’s Wanted Dead Or Alive went down as well as expected.

The track I think has been unfairly slept on this year
Luminodisco: Oh Mary

So long, secret weapon: it’s a killer, killer disco track with 303s and a big bold breakdown.

The track I’d play at sunset in Ibiza
Jose Padilla: Lollipop (I:Cube remix)

For a short sunset, or Manuel Göttsching’s E2-E4 for a very long one.

The track I’d play at my auntie’s wedding
Kid Creole And The Coconuts: I’m Corrupt

My cool aunt Hjørdis played me Kid Creole And The Coconuts some time in the 80s. I’m Corrupt is the one I’d give back.

The track I’d play at my funeral
Beat Happening: Gravedigger’s Blues

Possibly a bit morbid, but it would be fun.

Prins Thomas plays The Prince Of Wales, SW9, Saturday. His three-CD mix Paradise Goulash, released in a tin can, is out now on Eskimo
