Sleepy Hollow Declares Snow Emergency for Midnight

While many - like Sleepy Hollow cemetery gravedigger Frank Drahos - are gearing up for the worst, some parents were surprised schools didn't decide to dismiss early today.

Drahos was out distributing some salt with his shovel on the steep apron of the cemetery driveway alongside Route 9 late this morning.

The grounds are beautiful as the snow begins to fall, but to Drahos it's just more work. "I hate the snow," says this otherwise chipper man who is retiring Feb. 1 after 54 years at this post.

Two orange Sleepy Hollow DPW trucks full of sand pass on Broadway. In the villages, roads are already being salted as the snow begins and seems to be accumulating fast as promised. Conditions are drivable, at the moment.

Still, parents on the 10591 Facebook page were commenting even before it began, surprised our public schools are operating normally when all our neighbors aren't. Irvington, Elmsford, Ossining and Croton are out or dismissed early. Working parents were concerned Tarrytown would follow suit later in the day when they are gone.

Here, Transfiguration called a partial day. And TUFSD has now cancelled after-school programs.

At 12:30 p.m., Sleepy Hollow officials decided to consider it a snow emergency as of midnight tonight. Village Clerk Paula McCarthy writes:

A Snow Emergency has been declared for Wednesday, January 22nd, starting at 12:00 a.m.(Midnight) in the Village of Sleepy Hollow;

please follow street signage for parking rules.

Recyclables pick up has been suspended for Wednesday and postponed until Thursday.
