Google Glass Explorer Edition

Google has announced that it has moved to a more open beta, which means that any US resident can buy the $1500 wearable tech. Google previously had a 24 hour sale last month on Google Glass, but the sale only lasted a fraction of that time due to them selling out. Google noted on the announcement that the sale this time around should last for as long as they have them to sell. This time it doesn’t appear to be a limited time offer, but we aren’t sure how many Google has stocked up.

“Were still in the Explorer Program while we continue to improve our hardware and software, but starting today anyone in the US can buy the Glass Explorer Edition, as long as we have it on hand: google.com/glass

The full-blown consumer launch of Google Glass is expected to happen later this year. Google is said to be still working to improve hardware and software of Glass. IHS did a teardown of Google Glass this week and found that the hardware and manufacturing costs of Google Glass amount to just $152.47 (Google Glass carries a BOM of $132.47 plus $20.00 in manufacturing expenses). This expense doesn’t include any development costs, software, licensing, royalties or any other expenditures. It does mean that Google Glass is relatively inexpensive and that in the years to come we should be able to see wearable technology like this for under $200.
