In this Photoshop tutorial, I will show you the steps I took to Create this Unique Rock Text with Space Background in Photoshop. I will show you an interesting way to place the rocks and join them together with simple line-drawing techniques. This is a beginner to intermediate level tutorial, have a try!

Here is a preview of the final effect I have for this tutorial: (click to enlarge)

OK Let’s get started!

To complete this tutorial, you will need the following stocks:

Rock Image

Space Brush (Choose one from the list)

Step 1

Create a new document sized 1280px * 700px with black background. Use the space brush you downloaded, paint some space patterns over the background layer:

Hint: Make sure you set the brush flow and opacity to be both around 50%, to ensure we have only a subtle space effect.

Load the rock image into Photoshop and select a piece of the rock path using Quick Selection tool:

Copy and paste your selection over to the document, use the free transform tool to resize and rotate the rocks, to form the effect below:

Step 2

Duplicate these two rocks layer a few times, use the free tramsform tool to rotate the duplicated layers and move them around the canvas, and form a letter “T’, as shown below:

Continue with the same methond described above, and form the rest the letters, so it reads “TEXT”, as shown below:

Step 3

Now we get the fun part of this tutorial – Some line drawings!

It would be great if you have a graphic tablet for this part – if not, a mouse will do, although you may have to use the liquify filter or free transform tool to adjust the line shapes.

We will use a 1px, 90% hardness brush to paint some dark pink lines as shown below:

And use the same brush settings, paint some light pink colour as shown below:

Repeat this process, add more lines to join the rocks for all the letters:

Step 4

We can add some cloud with the cloud filter behind the text to add some dramatic effect, make sure you set the layer opacity to a low value of 30%:

Add some highlights to the rocks with a soft white brush:

Step 5

To finalise the effect, I flattened the layer and duplicated the background layer, and apply the following Unsharp Mask to the duplicated layer:

Duplicate this sharpened layer and apply the following Oil Paint Filter settings (CS6 only, skip this if you don’t have it):

This will add a nice softening effect to the text. We want add a layer mask to this layer and remove the red parts to reveal the layer below:

Add the following Selective Color adjustment layer on top to fine-tune the rock colour a bit:

And here is my final effect: (click to enlarge)

That’s it for this tutorial! Hope you enjoy it and find it useful! Drop me a comment below if you have any question.

Till next time, have a great day!
