New Flickr app on iOS adds pro-level editing features, live filters

With former Googler Marissa Mayer at the helm, Yahoo’s seen some positive developments in the last few months. More specifically, the company’s restored some glory to its most cherished brand, Flickr.

Back in May the company unveiled its overhaul of the photo sharing service, with an all-new interface and 1 terabyte of storage for all users. Since then it’s been polishing things and, as we saw yesterday, giving the iPhone version of the Flickr app a handy bunch of new features.

While it’s always been possible to take photos and upload them, from within the app, Yahoo has now added filters – a la Instagram. Except these are live filters that can be previewed in real time. That makes it a lot easier to choose the right one for the scene. After taking a photo it’s possible to go and fine-tune the filter’s effects, including adding a love-it-or-hate-it tilt shift focus.

The new Flickr app also has very powerful pro-level editing tools. It’s possible to adjust levels, straight photos, modify colour balance, and take complete control of each colour on a photo. For those who know what they’re doing this will make the Flickr app a must-have – it could even replace the standard camera app altogether.

Now for the Android version to catch up, and level the playing field.
