Calgary Zoo welcomes first Humboldt penguin chick

It’s a boy!

Proud first-time penguin parents Reina and Javier welcomed a small Humboldt chick into the Calgary Zoo’s penguin colony.

The unnamed male chick arrived on June 26.

Mom, dad and baby are doing well, according to the Calgary Zoo.

The baby bird is thriving in his new habitat at Penguin Plunge, where zoo attendees can catch a glimpse of the grey little guy.

The public will most likely have an opportunity to help name the new aquatic creature through social media, according to zoo staff.

The hatch marks the first of its kind for the zoo, and is a significant boost for the Calgary Zoo’s captive Humboldt penguin population.

“When these kinds of births occur it assures us we are getting one step closer to helping save important species,” said Malu Celli, Calgary Zoo curator.

Humboldt penguins are listed as vulnerable according the International Union For Conservation of Nature’s Red List.
