Lashing out at the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab for increasing the Value Added Tax (VAT) on the petrol and diesel in the state, leader of the opposition Partap Singh Bajwa Sunday said that “the true face of so-called Aam Aadmi government has been exposed”.

Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president Sukhbir Singh Badal also condemned the AAP government for putting “an unprecedented burden on the common man and farmers by repeatedly increasing VAT on petrol and diesel, including the latest hike which has made petrol and diesel amongst the costliest in the region.” Bajwa while referring to a news report, said that the cost of one litre of petrol in the state will now be Rs 98.65 while diesel price will be Rs 88.95 per litre.

“Before the initiation of the paddy transplant season, the AAP government seems to have provided the farmers with a gift of enhanced diesel price, which would further augment the input cost of the crop. The government must withdraw this anti-farmers and anti-people decision with immediate effect,” Bajwa said in a written statement.

The opposition leader said that “It is noteworthy that the previous, Congress Party, government in Punjab had slashed the petrol price by Rs 10 and diesel price by Rs 5 per litre in November 2021. From this decision of the AAP government, the people of Punjab can better assess who is the real pro-common man party.”

Bajwa said that “The lofty claims of AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and CM Bhagwant Mann have gone in vain as they have failed to raise revenue from various sources including Rs 20,000 crore in revenue from sand mining and Rs 34,000 crore by ending corruption.” He added, “The state government has ended up resorting to increasing the prices of essential commodities including petrol, diesel, and electricity to raise the state’s revenue.”

Festive offer

Demanding an immediate withdrawal of the “arbitrary increase”, Sukhbir said, “Instead of causing misery to the common man the government should save money by putting the brakes on its multi hundred crore advertising spend.”

He added, “There won’t be any need to raise additional resources as is being asserted by the AAP government if it ends its reckless advertisements as well as publicity gimmicks”.
