On Reviewing Games And How Much Play Time Is Enough

An opinion piece via EGMR in which the author discusses the age-old topic of how much of time spent playing a game makes for enough.

Quote: "Game reviews are the lifeblood of any gaming-related website that purports to be based on journalistic reporting of some sort. Getting onto Metacritic is a particularly effective means of promoting a site’s image and a good — or sometimes just sensational enough — review will pull site hits like you cannot believe. But what happens when those reviews are half-assed, or, perhaps more pertinently, what happens if they’re actually not but because of some reason or the other, people seem to think they are?"

Garethvk3677d ago

To the end unless it is a massive RPG or MMORPG and the reviewer should list they did not complete the game and how much time they spent with it.

Roccetarius3677d ago

Even if someone does play the game until the end, did the reviewer understand the mechanics enough as well?

Time certainly isn't everything, but it helps.

raWfodog3677d ago

I know that the article focuses on how much play time is enough for an accurate review but, even if a game is played all the way through, many reviewers have personal and sometime unconscious bias that also prevent them from giving a totally objective opinion. Many of them bring their love (or hate) from another game/genre into their reviews instead of judging a game on its own merits alone.

Blues Cowboy3677d ago (Edited 3677d ago )

Massive pedantry incoming: There's no such thing as an "objective opinion," surely? All gamers, whether reviewers or just hobbyists, have played different games in the past, base their comparisons on different titles, put weighting on different things and have their own tastes. An objective review is just a bulletpoint list of features that discuss whether a game mechanically holds up.

/Pedantry

However, I do think that reviewers *should* state whether or not they particularly love or hate a genre if it's appropriate. So I agree!

raWfodog3677d ago

I agree. All of our opinions/views are basically shaped by our past personal experiences so it is very hard to be truly objective when it comes to judging subjective content. You can objectively discuss the mechanical and factual aspects of a game with relative ease but its much harder with the subjective aspects.

hankmoody3677d ago

Depends on the game really and what genre it is, etc. There are some games that really don't begin to shine until you've spent a good amount of time with it. There are also games where you don't really get the full intentions of the developers until it's been let loose in the wild to be played online.

SpiralTear3676d ago

Pretty much. Depends on the game, really.

Garethvk3677d ago

Lets look at Elder Scrolls. I played alot of the beta and have played the launch version for a week. Although the embargo lifted last friday for reviews, the company has said you cannot play through the game in that amount of time. They suggested doing a series of impressions thus far. Yet we see countless reviews. 25-50 hours can give you an impression but you cannot do a full review based on that for this type of game.

Hidetaka Miyazaki claims Dark Souls 2 “carried” the series forward

Dark Souls 2 remains a divisive entry in the landmark RPG franchise, but Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it led to the success of Elden Ring.

The game isn't good though.

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

CrimsonWing6965d ago

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer64d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville64d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.

100%, locked 60fps and still look great all these years later, same with the expansion, definitely worth a look if people haven't played it yet, not the best games ever made but a good experience, hopefully a new infamous gets released

KwietStorm_BLM109d ago

Never was my favorite infamous, but it was definitely a graphics showcase early on PS4. Still plays well with the unlocked frame rate.

SDuck109d ago

Still remember getting hyped about this game nearing release. Funny because I never even got a PS4. Jumped from PS3 to PC so I never played it ahahaha

OmegaSoldati109d ago

Its a good game. But thats it. Congratulations you made the best choice. I dream to have a great PC one day.

Profchaos109d ago (Edited 109d ago )

Graphically It's a absolutely stunning game that still holds up today.

Didn't have all that much depth to it forcing you to play though twice for a platinum trophy a good and bad run it was a little disappointing how similar those were Delsin would be like I'm not doing that for you in a cutscene but the cutscene would play out and force you to do it anyway just as you would of in a good run

I did like the story however it got a lot of complaints back in the day people hated playing as Delsin instead of cole despite Coles story being wrapped up.

Overall though the map wasn't overly saturated with useless points of interest there was some collectibles and things to find but nothing compared to a Ubisoft game.

I think it was a good game if a little hollow I've played it through around 4 times now since it's so short.

Also it's DLC was great a full story expansion
