New Renderings Released of Frank Gehry and AECOM’s Revised Eisenhower Memorial, reports the Architectural Record.
Last fall, supporters and critics of Frank Gehry’s design for the Dwight D. Eisenhower memorial in Washington reached a compromise, allowing the project to proceed (with completion by June 6, 2019—the 75th anniversary of D-Da—a possibility). Now Gehry and AECOM have completed a revised design, reflecting the compromise, which will be presented to the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts on January 23.
The memorial’s key element, a 440-foot-long woven-metal tapestry, remains. But the subject of the tapestry has shifted. It had been a scene of Ike’s hometown of Abilene, Kanas; it is now an aerial view of Normandy, where Allied troops under Ike’s direction landed on D-Day. The other changes include relocating a statue of young Ike away from the center of the memorial and closer to the large Department of Education building behind it.

On April 3, 2014, the National Capital Planning Commission voted 7-to-3 to deny preliminary approval of the memorial.
The NCPC said it was supportive of a memorial, but rejected the current design because it failed to preserve the vista along Maryland Avenue SW, failed to preserve the view of the U.S. Capitol building, did not meet the L’Enfant Plan’s requirements for preserving open space, and did not “[respect] the building lines of the surrounding rights-of-way”.

At the request of Representative Darrell Issa, chair of the (United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform|House Oversight and Government Reform Committee), the NCPC asked the Eisenhower Memorial Commisson to report back to it every two months on its memorial redesign.

Frank Gehry Eisenhower Memorial Design Halted
Congress budget cuts have officially stalled Frank Gehry’s controversial Eisenhower Memorial, according to a recent report, rejecting $49 m in construction funds and cutting the Eisenhower Memorial Commission’s annual budget in half.
Unless the commission is able to raise a substantial amount of private funds, as well as win support from the Eisenhower family (which is doubtful), Gehry’s “grandiose” memorial is unlikely to ever break ground. Despite this, the commission’s director is optimistic, stating that the FDR Memorial took nearly 45 years to get built.

Frank Gehry unveils changes to Eisenhower Memorial design

New changes to the contentious design for the Eisenhower Memorial were publicly unveiled on Tuesday at a session in Washington. Architect Frank Gehry made the adjustments following complaints by members of the Eisenhower family that the design put too much emphasis on the former president’s upbringing in Kansas and not enough on his accomplishments as a military and political leader.
Among the notable changes are the addition of statues depicting Eisenhower, which would replace stone relief images, according to reports. The statues show Eisenhower as a military commander during World War II and as president.
Gehry didn’t attend the hearing in Washington because he is currently working with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on the sets for its production of Mozart’s “Don Giovanni.” But the L.A. architect sent a letter to the Eisenhower Memorial Commission explaining the design changes.
“I have refined the design to incorporate (feedback) which I believe helps tell the story of Eisenhower with more dignity and more power,” he wrote.
He said in the letter that the statues “bring the (Eisenhower) story to life in a more powerful and accessible way than the bas reliefs were able to do.”
Gehry’s design keeps the metal tapestries that will surround the park-like space. The metal tapestries show scenes from Eisenhower’s childhood in Kansas.

The Eisenhower Memorial Commission is to progress with Frank Gehry’s design, despite the Eisenhower family’s objections.

Commission members are “unanimous in their total and unqualified support’’ for the Los Angeles architect’s vision for the Washington memorial to former President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the commission said in a statement.They called the design “exciting, creative and inspiring”.
The commission also expressed “regret and sadness at the tone and nature of the selected comments that have been made on Mr. Gehry’s design for the memorial.”
The statement follows a congressional hearing at which the former president’s granddaughter, Susan Eisenhower, called for a redesign. She complained, among other things, about the depiction of Eisenhower as “a dreamy boy,” a reference to plans for a statue of a young Eisenhower looking out at stone bas reliefs of his future roles of supreme Allied commander of World War II and president.

Design for Eisenhower Memorial Attracts New Attacks
Chicago investment manager and philanthropist Richard Driehaus and architect Leon Krier line up to attack the Eisenhower Memorial design by Frank Gehry.
In January 2012 The Associated Press reported the Eisenhower family was asking the National Capital Planning Commission to delay final approval so the Eisenhower Memorial could be redesigned.

Architect Frank Gehry has proposed a memorial park framed by large metal tapestries depicting Eisenhower’s boyhood home in Kansas. Eisenhower as military hero and president would be represented in stone on a smaller scale.
The Eisenhower family says the design overemphasizes “Ike’s” humble roots and neglects his accomplishments.
Congressman Frank Wolf has called for a delay in the project, arguing that the design by Frank Gehry is unacceptable to Eisenhower historians and the Eisenhower family.
The president’s grandson, the family’s sole representative on the Memorial Commission, has resigned from the Commission.

FOR NATIONAL EISENHOWER MEMORIAL
Design for Eisenhower Memorial Moves Forward
(WASHINGTON, DC – March 25, 2010) – The Eisenhower Memorial Commission has unanimously selected the preferred design concept created by world-renowned architect Frank O. Gehry. The Eisenhower Memorial will be the first presidential memorial of the 21st century, and only the seventh in U.S. history.
In selecting the preferred concept alternative, the Commissioners considered not only aesthetic and thematic issues, but also the impact on historic resources, the impact on the environment, and the estimated construction costs.
David Eisenhower, President Eisenhower’s grandson and a member of the Commission said, “We were all impressed with Frank’s vision for the memorial. His understanding of my grandfather’s accomplishments and legacy is remarkable, and he was able to translate the key theme of democracy into a compelling visual experience.”
The selected design will be located on a four-acre site at the base of Capitol Hill (between 4th and 6th Streets SW, south of Independence Avenue). This design not only creates a gathering place for memorial visitors, it also represents Eisenhower’s ability to bring people together to achieve goals on behalf of the citizens he served.
From a central location featuring a grove of oak trees, visitors will move to different parts of the memorial, where themes from Eisenhower’s life will be presented. The selected design concept includes columns along the north and south edges of the site, paying homage to the memorial traditions of the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials, while respecting the historic vista along Maryland Avenue.
Large memorial tapestries of woven stainless steel mesh supported on the colonnade of limestone depict images of Eisenhower’s life, amplifying the setting and creating an ideal background for the memorial experience.
“The approach to the design was to create a cohesive and important civic space and urban monument in the heart of the capital region that provides a quiet and contemplative space for learning about the vast accomplishments of President Eisenhower” said Frank Gehry. “He was a masterful but modest leader. My aim was to capture that spirit with the design”. Mr. Gehry is the founder and partner of Gehry Partners, LLP based in Los Angeles, California.

Memorial designer Frank Gehry and his team were selected in March 2009 as the result of a three-stage design excellence competition process through General Services Administration’s (GSA) Design Excellence Program. GSA is working with Gilbane Building Company to oversee the design and construction management of the memorial. The design process began on January 8, 2010, with the signing of the design contract.

The site is the unnamed plaza bounded by Maryland Avenue SW, 4th Street SW, and 6th Street SW as its preferred site. The plaza is separated from Independence Avenue SW and the National Air and Space Museum by Seaton Section Park, and is adjacent to the north side of the Lyndon Baines Johnson Department of Education Building.

The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission
A memorial to honor and celebrate Dwight D. Eisenhower will be built on a four-acre site at the base of Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. The Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial Commission was created by Congress in 1999 to manage memorial development.
The bipartisan Commission is comprised of 12 members — four Senators, four Representatives, and four private citizens. It is led by Chairman, Rocco C. Siciliano, and Vice Chairman, Senator Daniel K. Inouye who both served in the European theater that Eisenhower commanded. A location for the National Eisenhower Memorial was selected in 2005 and congressionally approved in 2006. The four-acre site lies between 4th and 6th Streets, SW, south of Independence Avenue.
It is surrounded by institutions connected to Eisenhower, including the Department of Education, and the National Air and Space Museum which houses artifacts of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), created by Eisenhower in 1958.
