Facebook now accounts for a FIFTH of the total time spent on our smartphones, the social network has revealed.

One in every five minutes spent browsing smartphones app – is spent using Facebook.

The average smartphone user spends around 46 minutes each day browsing the US social network's mobile apps – excluding its hugely popular WhatsApp messaging service.

The social network, launched by CEO Mark Zuckerberg in February 2004, is more popular than ever, with a staggering 1.5 billion users around the globe.

Of the three billion people around the world who currently have internet access – half check their Facebook page at least once a month.

Facebook has proven its ability to attract and retain users

Facebook also has 968 million daily active users overall, of which 844 million are accessing the social network on mobile devices.

That triggered a 62 per cent a year increase in mobile advertising revenue, the firm reported at its quarterly results earlier this week.

The US firm's expenses have risen 82 per cent, from £976 million to £1.7 billion. Facebook says the bump is due to last year's £13 billion WhatsApp acquisition, as well as hiring new employees.

Some 11,000 people now work for Facebook, which is relatively small for a company with its valuation – now in excess of £170 billion.

"Once again Facebook has proven its ability to attract and retain users," commented Forrester Research analyst Nate Elliott.

"It's particularly impressive that users are more engaged than ever before - that the percentage of monthly users who visit every day continues to grow."
