SANTO DOMINGO — U.S. Marines guarding the U.S. embassy here today [April 29] were attacked by rebel snipers firing on them from concealed positions. The Marines returned the fire from behind cars on the embassy’s lawn, killing four of their attackers. The firing, which lasted less than 15 minutes, was the first action for the Marines since they landed here yesterday on President Johnson’s orders. None of them was injured in the engagement. — New York Herald Tribune, European edition, April 30, 1965
