Use These Questions to Start “The Money Talk” with Your Partner

Openly talking about money in a relationship is important—and difficult. Get the conversation started by comparing your and your partner’s answers to these questions.

You probably won’t agree on everything, but at least you can explore why each of you answered the way you did. Nicole Weaver, writing at The Billfold, suggests questions that worked for her and her boyfriend:

  • What is the most important thing you are saving for currently?

  • What non-necessity is the most important for you to have a budget for?

  • How often should we review our goals (both short- and long-term)?

  • After moving in together do you think it’s important that we talk about “big purchases?” If so how much do you consider being a big purchase?

  • After moving in together, what is the backup plan in case one of us becomes unemployed?

These are just a few in a much larger list. Pick the ones that work for the stage of your relationship, and topics that you haven’t already discussed with your partner. If none of these feel right, you can make your own list (and ask your partner to add their questions.) After this initial money talk, schedule regular financial “date nights” to make sure the two of you are consistently on the same page.
