David Ames named in Great Britain men's hockey squad

Great Britain have included former Ireland player David Ames in an 18-man squad for the World League semi-final.

GB coach Bobby Crutchley has retained 14 players who competed at last year's Champions Trophy for the main Olympic qualifying tournament in Antwerp.

Harry Martin, James Bailey, Dan Shingles and Ames are called up for the event which starts on 20 June.

Ames recently completely a three-year international exclusion before becoming eligible in April.

Great Britain will play European rivals and hosts Belgium in their opening pool game before facing Ireland, China and Malaysia to complete the group phase of the competition, with a place in the World League Final as well as Olympic qualification up for grabs.

"I'm pleased with the way the squad has come together," said Crutchley.

"There were some difficult decisions as the group is a little stronger than it has been in the past."

On the inclusion of Ames for his first tournament, following his recent debut against Australia, Crutchley said: "He's rarely flustered so he's been very impressive in that respect, but it'll be a big tournament for him.

"He's a quality player and it certainly makes us stronger having him in the squad."
