Porsche used to focus a lot more on factory racing efforts, but that’s a side of the business that takes care of itself thanks to plenty of racing 911 that tear up racetracks around the world, in the hands of privateers. Now, though, they’re back.

What you see below is their latest attempt to take the Le Mans crown to Stuttgart yet again, after having previously done so sixteen times before, and it’s called the 919 Hybrid.

It follows the trend set by Toyota, Peugeot and Audi to go for a hybrid powertrain, but the engine it uses is even more interesting and rarer than some of the diesels found in the competition: a 2.0-liter V4 turbocharged engine (half of VW’s 4-liter V8 at heart, maybe?) that works in conjunction with an electric motor placed on the front axle.

Power figures are not mentioned, but it tips the scales at just 870 kg or 1,920 lbs, so it makes ample use of every single one of its horses.

The car has been revealed at the Geneva motor show, and will be entered into this year’s edition of the LeMans race, scheduled for 14-15 June. Until then, scroll down and check it out in the gallery and video posted after the virtual jump.
