When Rolan is separated from his siblings in the Shadow Cursed Lands, he finds himself gripped by despair and once more in the position of owing the bard Kanai Tavmotet his life. However, all is not lost, and soon Rolan learns that perhaps there are people outside of his family upon whom he can rely and eventually, perhaps even love.
Meanwhile, Kanai is utterly baffled at the fact that she's been made the de facto leader of her strange group of companions. A bard to the last, she feels that she's mostly been relying on her skill in bullshitting to get by (with admittedly pretty decent results). However, despite a somewhat rocky start, she discovers to her delight that with Rolan she feels less like a Leader and more like just Kanai. Before long she is forced to come to grips with the fact that when the world is crashing down around you, perhaps there's nothing to be lost in taking a chance on love.
