There is a nice little magic brick called the SunSaver made by MorningStar Solar: http://www.morningstarcorp.com/en/sun-saver. It basically has 6 important terminals: 2 for PV panel, 2 for battery, 2 for your loads. Its a solid professional quality device thats only like $65 from Amazon. It manages the charging of your battery and disconnects your stuff connected to the load terminals if the battery runs down.
Shop around for the best price on a PV panel (I use solarblvd.com they have 100W panels for $125). Visit [big box store] for a deep cycle battery and a couple fuse holders and a battery terminal disconnect.
The goal stuff is overpriced and some of the Northern Tool stuff can be [sub par]. This past weekend, I installed the MPPT version of the SunSaver in my place and its built really well.
I recommend the inverter by MorningStar or the Xantrex ProWatt which I have installed (600W version).
