Stalingrad Trailer

Witness the story of six brothers in arms. Damn. Russia has gone seriously epic with this movie, and I can't wait to see it. While this has been set for international release soon, we haven't posted a trailer for it before. Sony has unveiled a full trailer for Stalingrad, directed by Fedor Bondarchuk, starring Thomas Kretschmann, Yanina Studilina and Philippe Reinhardt, telling the story of the 1942 WWII Battle of Stalingrad. "While the whole might of the German army descended upon them, the heroes of Stalingrad would experience love, loss, joy and the sense of ultimate freedom that can only be felt by those about to die." They went all out and built a massive set, shooting this in 3D and IMAX at the same time. Take a look.

Here's the full trailer for Fedor Bondarchuk's Stalingrad, found right on YouTube (via TheMovieBox):

Bondarchuk's Stalingrad is set during one of the most important battles of World War II, a battle which stopped the progress of Nazi forces and turned the tide of war. It is 1942. The Soviet army plans to mount a counter-attack on the Nazi forces that occupy half of Stalingrad on the other side of river Volga. But the operation to cross the river is unsuccessful. A few soldiers who managed to get to the other side take refuge in a house on the bank of Volga. Here they find a girl who did not escape when the Germans came. A true romance would blossom in this unlikely place amid the bloodiest battle in the history of mankind.

Stalingrad is directed by Fedor Bondarchuk (of 9th Company & The Inhabited Island previously). The film was submitted by Russia for Best Foreign Language consideration. The construction of the set took six months, involving over 400 people. This was shot entirely in 3D, but there's still no US release date set yet.

I shall see... I very much wish for a good new WW2 movie and while not knowing whether this one will be IT, it surely looks intriguing so far...

So I have to pick a side to feel involved in this movie: either I am with Hitler or with Stalin. Tough choice.

I know the Nazi's were dressed by the Italians, but Russian outfits looked cooler.

I like Bondarchuk, I very much like the 9th Company, but the directing style in this trailer feels at odds with the subject. The CGI, the slow motion, the money shots, the style of the action are fitting for an (already dated) generic action film, but Stalingrad is of of the longest, most gruelling and deadly battles in history. About 2 millions casualties over a 5 months battle! People dying of cold and hunger. A nightmare. I'd rather see a more gritty style, otherwise it seems to me the subject is treated a bit too lightly, or at least it creates too much distance with this kind of action. But maybe, despite the title, it's just about one very brief and heroic passage that can be appreciated out of context... Anyway, I'll know after I see it, which I will certainly try to.
