The saying “text coming off the page” takes on whole new meaning within fragments of the gridworks collection projects archive by A. Bill Miller. In this collection of videos, Miller uses the iconography of text as a medium to create a densely recursive tableau. Using a palette that harkens back to old CRTs and 80s computer graphics, this collection transports viewers to a rich and poetic environment. The buzzing feedback reminiscent of blocked transmissions speaks to the fragmentary nature of the fictional archive that Miller has created for his prolific and expansive oeuvre. Built to be “reflective of a fragmentary and evolving/dissolving whole” this collection both encapsulates and breaks open the visual style familiar to those that have encountered Miller’s work. In so doing, the collection pushes Miller’s inquiry of and exploration into the ways in which the text and the written word can still surprise and amaze us.
