Everyone always says that it’s lonely at the top, and it turns out, that’s even more true when paired with male ego and some anger management issues.

In a new trailer for Southpaw, Jake Gyllenhaal plays Billy “The Great” Hope, a boxer who fights his way to a championship, only to find his entire life crumbling around him. After his wife is killed, Hope goes down a dark path, eventually losing his daughter to social services. So how does he pick himself back up? With the help of Forest Whitaker, of course.

The film, which also stars Rachel McAdams, Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, Naomie Harris, and Victor Ortiz, comes from a screenplay by Richard Wenk and Sons of Anarchy‘s Kurt Sutter. Training Day‘s Antoine Fuqua directed.

Southpaw is set to hit theaters on July 31.
