Orlando nightclub shooting: Tony nominees and performers respond

Tony Awards nominees and performers like Lin-Manuel Miranda and Danielle Brooks have joined the growing list of celebrities lamenting the massacre that left at least 50 people dead Sunday morning at a gay nightclub in Orlando.

The Tony Awards announced that its 70th ceremony, set to air Sunday evening at 8 p.m. ET on CBS, will be dedicated to the victims of the shooting. The New York Times theater reporter Michael Paulson also reported that the cast of Hamilton is dropping the use of muskets from their planned performance at the event.

President Obama said the attack, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history, is “a sobering reminder that attacks on any American — regardless of race, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation — is an attack on all of us and on the fundamental values of equality and dignity that define us as a country.” He referred to Pulse, the venue where the attack took place, as “more than a nightclub — it is a place of solidarity and empowerment where people have come together to raise awareness, to speak their minds, and to advocate for their civil rights.”

The murderer, 29-year-old Omar Mateen, entered the nightclub wielding an assault rifle and a handgun, killing 50 people and injuring 53 others, before police shot and killed him. He reportedly pledged allegiance to the leader of ISIS during a 911 call before the massacre.
