Sister Marilyn Fenton, RSM, taught children at St. Rita's School, dies at 83

Sister Marilyn Fenton, 2010

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Sister Marilyn Fenton, 83, of Annadale, a Sister of Mercy who taught at St. Rita's School in Meiers Corners and will be remembered as a loving and prayerful person with a wonderful sense of humor, died Friday in Staten Island University Hospital, Prince's Bay.

Born and raised in Brooklyn, she entered the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas in 1952 and professed her final vows in August 1954 in Tarrytown, Westchester County.

Sister Marilyn was educated at Mercy College, Dobbs Ferry, also Westchester County.

She came to Staten Island over 50 years ago, and her first ministry was at St. Michael's Home for Children in Greenridge, where she was a group mother. After the home closed, she worked at a community residence.

Sister Marilyn then became an elementary school teacher at St. Rita's School in Meiers Corners, a position she held for 32 years. She retired around 2010.

She had been living at the Presentation Sisters' convent in Annadale for 10 years.

Sister Marilyn was energetic and active, fun-loving and pleasant company. She was fond of playing golf, especially when she had a hole-in-one. She also enjoyed traveling, photography, reading and playing cards. Creative and artistic, she liked to draw. And she was very involved in the religious community.

"Sister Marilyn will be missed for her sense of humor, generous spirit and loving heart," said Sister Janet Dunn of the Presentation Sisters.

Sister Marilyn was a parishioner of St. Rita's R.C. Church, Meiers Corners, where she served as a lector, CCD teacher and Eucharistic minister, and brought Communion to the sick.

She was preceded in death by her brother, Edward Fenton, and is survived by nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Matthew Funeral Home, Willowbrook, with a Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Rita's Church. Burial will follow in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, Westchester County.
