ACCURATE 3D-PRINTED LUNAR GLOBE

French artist Oscar Lhermitte and Kudu studio have teamed up to realize a perfet 1:20,000,000 scale mode of the moon. Moon is a topographically accurate lunar globe displaying the current Moon phase at any given time.

The project involves the use of the latest data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter combined with advanced electronic and mechanical engineering paired with careful craftsmanship in mould making. This results in a truly accurate copy of the Moon with surface’s features in every detail.

With the use of algorithms, a ring of LEDs follows in real time the path of the Moon and constantly lits its correct face, recreating the lunar phases as seen from Earth. Learn more about the product on its Kickstarterpage.

It takes two unique types of mirrors working together to see farther back in time and space than ever before, and engineers at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center have just received one of each type. Primary and Secondary Mirror Engineering Design Units (EDUs) have recently arrived at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md. from Northrop Grumman Aerospace Systems in Redondo Beach, Calif. and are undergoing examination and testing. When used on the James Webb Space Telescope those two types of mirrors will allow scientists to make those observations.

NASA’s New Robotic Lander Prototype Skates Through Integration and Testing

NASA engineers successfully integrated and completed system testing on a new robotic lander recently at Teledyne Brown Engineering’s facility in Huntsville in support of the Robotic Lunar Lander Project at NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

The lander prototype was placed on modified skateboards and a customized track system as a low-cost solution to control movement during final testing of the prototype’s sensors, onboard computer, and thrusters. The functional test focused on ensuring that all system components work seamlessly to sense, communicate, and command the lander’s movements.

Russia and NASA plan to COLONISE the Moon

‘We want to do more than just step on it’

Russian, American and European space agencies are in talks to create a human colony on the moon, according to Russian news source Rianovosti.

Russia wants to build either a space base on the surface of the Moon itself or a space station that closely orbits the heavenly body – and has planned talks with NASA and the European Space Agency about creating the manned base. It has been 40 years since humans visited the Moon and Russia cosmo-bosses want to go further this time.

“We don’t want the man to just step on the Moon,” agency chief Vladimir Popovkin said in an interview with Vesti FM radio station. “Today, we know enough about it. We know that there is water in its polar areas,” he added. “We are now discussing how to begin [the Moon’s] exploration with NASA and the European Space Agency.”

In the wake of his speech, NASA began scrambling to find a way to reach the Moon in advance of the Soviet Union, which at the time held a commanding lead in space. Apollo, already on the drawing board as an Earth orbiting program, was revised to reflect the lunar goal and Gemini was established as the interim program.

The pieces were in place; all NASA needed was a way to get to the Moon. Against this pressing background, two men proposed a desperate and direct mission to get an American on the Moon as quickly as possible.

The new map, created by the Gravity Recovery and Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) mission, is allowing scientists to learn about the moon’s internal structure and composition in unprecedented detail.

The gravity field map reveals an abundance of features never before seen in detail, such as tectonic structures, volcanic landforms, basin rings, crater central peaks and numerous simple, bowl-shaped craters. Data also show the moon’s gravity field is unlike that of any terrestrial planet in our solar system.
