Turn Off Facebook's "On This Day" Nostalgia Posts With This Filter

Facebook’s nostalgia feature On This Day may be nice if you like revisiting old posts, but if you want to disable it, there’s frustrating no off switch. Here’s how to trick it into not showing you anything, though.

Facebook’s totally-not-a-Timehop-ripoff feature will show you posts you made on this day anywhere from one to eleven years ago (when Facebook was formed). For reasons we can’t fathom, Facebook did not make this feature optional. You can choose to see “fewer” nostalgia posts—though in my experience this resulted in one every two or three days, instead of every day—but you can’t turn it off entirely.

Fortunately, there’s a workaround. While you can’t turn it off, you can filter certain dates from ever appearing (presumably to prevent Facebook from reminding you of the time you posted about getting in a car accident or something terrible). By using this feature to create a filter that covers your entire lifespan, past and future, you can effectively turn this feature off, if not explicitly disable it. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Open up the desktop version of Facebook.

  2. Under “Apps” on the left-hand side, click On This Day.

  3. Click “Preferences” in the top-right corner.

  4. Next to “Dates” under “Filters,” click Edit.

  5. Click Select Dates.

  6. Choose a Start Date from any time before you first joined Facebook. (If you’re not sure, anything before 2004 will work.)

  7. Choose an End Date far in the future. Ideally, this is so far in the future you’ll never actually reach this date.

  8. Click Done and then click Save.

You did it! Now all of your memories have been wiped clean! I mean, not like Eternal Sunshine of the Total Recall or anything. But Facebook will no longer show you any memories of past posts. If you’d rather keep getting memory posts, but don’t want certain ones (like any post during that one phase of your life you’d rather forget, you know the one), you can narrow the filter to just a certain time frame.
