The SHIELD Tablet is still going strong, right there with the SHIELD Android TV. (The original SHIELD Portable, not so much. Hey NVIDIA, where's that SHIELD 2 you guys were working on?) The original tablet and the slightly newer variant, the K1, were both updated to Android 6.0 a couple of months ago after a rocky start. But for some reason the K1 is getting the latest incremental update first. K1 update 1.2 adds Android 6.0.1, including the security patches from March.
On top of that there are quite a few new features packed into this relatively small bump. Notably the latest software supports the Vulkan graphics API plus Android Doze mode. The SHIELD gets a few tweaks itself, including repositioned navigation buttons in landscape mode, a double-tap power button shortcut to launch the camera, and USB MIDI support. The rest of the tweaks and bug fixes are as follows:
- Adds memory compression enhancement
- Improved Wi-Fi connectivity when waking from sleep
- Fixed Compass functionality
- Fixed Gamepad Mapper issues
- Fixed issues with moving apps to SD card
- Fixed Doom 3 HDMI output issue
- Repositioned Lasso Capture icons in landscape mode
- Update to Android 6.0 Security Patch Level March 1, 2016
- Overall stability and security enhancements
The same update should be coming to the original version of the SHIELD Tablet soon, though it's worth noting that the LTE version of that model is still limping along on Android 5.1.1.
