Leonardo DiCaprio: 'Oscar' presented to actor by Russian group

The world watched last month as Leonardo DiCaprio accepted the Academy Award for Best Actor for his role in The Revenant, and now the actor is saying thanks for a different sort of accolade.

Before DiCaprio’s Oscar win, The Washington Post reported that a group of filmmakers in eastern Russia had decided to honor DiCaprio by crafting a statuette of their own. The trophy resembles an Oscar, the Post noted, but holds a “Choron,” a three-legged goblet that symbolizes peace, instead of a sword.

DiCaprio has apparently received the statue, and shared a photo of it on Instagram this week with words of thanks for the “wonderful gift.”

“Thank you to the people of Yakutia for this wonderful gift, especially all of the women who gathered and donated the materials that went into creating the statue,” he captioned the snapshot. “As they wrote in their letter, Yakutia is home to the coldest inhabited place not only in Russia, but also on Earth – and the region is extremely vulnerable to climate change. Rising temperatures pose a major threat to its people, their way of life and their natural habitat.”

DiCaprio, who portrayed real-life fur trapper Hugh Glass for his award-winning turn in The Revenant, also addressed the issue of climate change during his acceptance speech at the Oscars.

“Climate change is real. It is happening right now,” he said at the Feb. 28 ceremony. “It is the most urgent threat facing our entire species, and we need to work collectively together and stop procrastinating. We need to support leaders around the world who do not speak for the big polluters or the big corporations, but who speak for all of humanity, for the indigenous people of the world, for the billions and billions of underprivileged people who will be most affected by this, for our children’s children, and for those people out there whose voices have been drowned out by the politics of greed.”
