Sergio Ramos picked up the 20th red card of his career as Real Madrid claimed a dramatic 2-1 win over Las Palmas in a match controlled, for the most part, by the hosts.
Indeed, Zinedine Zidane’s side were second best for much of the contest in Gran Canaria, with the home side dictating possession and play in front of their own fans. They were unfortunate to fall behind in the first half when Ramos angled a magnificent glancing header into the top corner from a corner kick.
But Las Palmas recovered and looked to have snatched a point when Willian Jose made the most of some slack play by Mateo Kovacic to dink a wonderful finish over Keylor Navas and into the net. It was no more than the hosts deserved.
However, Real Madrid hit back within moments, as Casemiro headed home from a corner kick delivery to the back post. There was still time for Ramos to pick up a second booking as Real Madrid escaped from one of their displays of the season with three points. However, they are still 12 points behind Barcelona.

TALKING POINT

Will Zinedine Zidane get the time to make this team his own? Real Madrid might have emerged with three points, but this was arguably their worst performance of the season. They were disjointed throughout and played the match with very little fluidity or cohesion. They are a team of individuals, so will Zidane be given the time in the summer to forge this side into a team unit?

MAN OF THE MATCH

Keylor Navas (Real Madrid): There was a poll conducted by a Madrid newspaper earlier this week which asked supporters who they would rather have as the Real Madrid number one next season: Keylor Navas or David De Gea? They voted overwhelmingly for the Costa Rican, and on this performance it’s easy to see why. Navas once again was the difference for Real Madrid, saving their turgid defence time after time. Where would they be without him? Even further adrift of Barcelona, most likely.

KEY MOMENTS

12’ - WILLIAN JOSE SHOULD HAVE SCORED! Modric gives up the ball cheaply allowing the Las Palmas striker clean through on goal, but Navas comes out to make the smothering save.
24’ - RONALDO SHOULD HAVE OPENED THE SCORING! Modric plays the perfect pass through to the Portuguese winger, but his left-footed shot is straight into the midriff of the keeper Varas.
25’ - GOAL! Las Palmas 0 Real Madrid 1: What a header that was! Ramos finds the very top corner of the net with a glancing header about 18 yards out from goal. There was some power in that!
31’ - INCHES AWAY FROM A RONALDO GOAL! Lucas did really well to get down the wing and square the ball into the box, but Ronaldo's low shot is deflected just wide of the post.
68’ - ANOTHER BIG SAVE FROM NAVAS! Momo nutmegs Pepe inside the box and lays it off to Nili, but the Real Madrid keeper comes rushing off his line to make the smothering save.
86’ - THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE EQUALISER! Bigas did so well to break to the byline and send a cross into Araujo but the striker couldn't get over the ball and heads over the bar.
87’ - GOAL! Las Palmas 1 Real Madrid 1: That goal has been coming! Real Madrid lose the ball and Willian Jose's scuffed shot finds the bottom corner past Navas. We are level!
89’ - GOAL! Las Palmas 1 Real Madrid 2: Real Madrid have the lead again! They were barely level for a minute! Casemiro loses his marker and heads home at the back post from a corner.
92’ - SENT OFF! Sergio Ramos (Real Madrid). The centre-back picks up his second booking of the match for a late tackle and he will now miss next week's match against Sevilla.
