Contouring—once a technique reserved only for runway models with enviable bone structure, is now a staple makeup technique. And while we know it's all about the artistry—and illusion—of subtle definition to enhance your natural features (or cheat the ones you wish you had), it is not that easy to execute.

Sculpting really is an art and one that brand ambassador of Illamasqua, make-up artist Zoe Peplow sheds some light on. If you're only depending on bronzing powders to chisel features, you're in for a surprise. Cream-based bronzers let you achieve the same effect but look more natural because they're easier to blend.

Follow Peplow's 5 simple steps to master the dark art of contouring with cream cosmetics, because a good cheekbone—even if it's faux—is the way to wear your makeup this season.

  1. Prep for perfection

Creating a beautiful base is key to achieving a flawless, contoured finish. Start by applying primer to the face, then buff on a cream foundation to even out the skin tone.

  1. Intensify your focus

Cream products work well to create intensity in focus areas like the cheek and brow bones; be sure to choose a product with no shimmer to mimic the matte shadows of the face in the most natural way.

  1. Draw the line

First, extend symmetrical lines from the tops of the ear to the corners of the mouth to sculpt cheekbones. Then apply vertical lines down the sides of the nose to slim down features and add definition.

  1. Get lippy

To give the appearance of fuller lips, shade a shadow line under the bottom lip to plump out your pout. And finally, enhance the contour around the hairline to add shadow to the forehead.

  1. Blur the lines

Use the Illamasqua Blending Brush to delicately buff the contour lines into the foundation for a seamless finish; and set with translucent power to ensure it lasts all day.
