Hedgerow Prominence Erupts

Hedgerow.jpg

A tangled mass of plasma strands rose up above the Sun in an arch, then quickly fell apart as it broke away into space (Mar. 26-27, 2015). These densely structured prominences, usually unstable, are suspended above the Sun by magnetic forces. Here they are imaged in a wavelength of extreme ultraviolet light. Amateur astronomers worldwide have been having a wonderful time watching this event unfold. The video covers less than a day of activity. Credit: Solar Dynamics Observatory, NASA.
