2015 ‘Krigen’ Directed by Tobias Lindholm
Company commander Claus Michael Pedersen and his men are stationed in Helmand, Afghanistan. Meanwhile back in Denmark, with a husband at war and three children missing their father, everyday life is a struggle for Claus' wife Maria. During a routine mission, the soldiers are caught in heavy Taliban crossfire. In order to save his men, Claus makes a decision that ultimately sees him return to Denmark accused of a war crime.

On the road: Danes Horizon: The Land of the Royal Dansks
Dar Salim starred in a war film prior to his work on Guy Ritchie's latest flick, but this time he shares the screen with none other than Euron Greyjoy, who plays a soldier whose action during the war while fighting the Taliban ends up getting him accused of a war crime.
This was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Foreign category, and I can see that. Pilou does a great job conveying much of the internal conflict and anguish he endures as he gets haunted by certain actions he has to take that at first seemed to be good, but unfortunately, it all backfires.

From that languorous opening shot of soldiers trundling through a dusty and deserted plain, which resembles something out of a classic western, A War oozes peril. It is a war film done right, in which the gunfights and action sequences aren't drowning in machismo and the consequences of decisions made in the heat of the moment aren't agonised over as though they are an academic essay on the moral rights and wrongs of conflict but are instead seen solely through the eyes of the characters - men, women and children - they impact most.

How does one choose side in a war no one ever asked for in the first place? Do we save our own men or think about the safety of others? A subject done right..I am not tying to compare but this is how American Sniper should have been at least the domestic parts. The acting is good but more importantly it questions our moral compass on what is right and what is wrong. A well deserved Oscar Best Foreign Film Nominee.
Following on from his last film A Hijacking, one that was filled with similarly complex moral scenarios, Tobias Lindholm follows up A War. With the two titles so closely matched you tend to think this may be part of a trilogy of some sorts. He also co-wrote The Hunt which again presented a convoluted situation, so it just as likely his approach will always layered with a multitude of angles.
His handheld, in the moment style continues here, joining a Danish military company as they patrol Afghanistan. The potential death of one of the men while in action leads their commander to make a call that allows their escape but leaves devastation behind them. One half of the film embeds…

Membicarakan kondisi moralitas dan sisi kemanusiaan dalam situasi perang memang tidak akan ada habisnya. Apalagi kalau sudah bersangkutan dengan yang namanya hukum dan undang-undang dimana setiap perbuatan yang dianggap melanggar olehnya akan segera mendapatkan ganjarannya. Namun, di lain hal kita tidak pernah tahu apa yang terjadi sebenarnya di medan perang tempat terjadinya konflik. Secara logika, adalah hal yang normal untuk melindungi teman dari serangan musuh yang memiliki niat untuk melukai. Oscar-nominated Danish war drama, Krigen [A War] is tense and filled with ethical quandaries in the midst of a brutal conflict. The comparisons to The Hurtlocker for its warzone story are apt, however this muted yet gripping film puts things in an even more personal level.
Aside from the main characters credited, much of the cast were Danish soldiers who had in fact served in Afghanistan, where the film takes place. I think this choice results in an added level of reality and tension to the story (the dialogue in particular is incredibly realistic, so much so that the layperson may be lost in some of the lingo), which, after a terrible incident involving…
A simple comparison of William Friedkin's Rules Of Engagement and A War will reveal the very fundamental differences in filmmaking sensitivies that separate Hollywood from Europe and maybe even from the rest of the world in general. While they essentially tell the same story about a man put on trial because his decision as a commander of a military unit led to loss of civilian life, they have absolutely nothing in common otherwise. I do remember liking Friedkin's film, but most of my enjoyment was derived from its theatrical tension and the fact many Hollywood courtroom thrillers share a lot of their genetic makeup with boxing films. During the first half the daily life of the soldier and the life of his family are played against each other. Both have to make important decisions that will impact the future and many parallels are drawn between battlefronts and domestic home life.
The second half starts with the soldier returning home from war and having to stand trail.
A War discusses accountability, guilt and grief in a very realistic manner. Precise story telling, incredible performances and complex moralities make this movie a thought provoking one that never has to take pro- or anti-war sides, just displaying what war is and what it leads to is enough.
