Doubling down: the Snapdragon 830 processor might feature eight custom Kryo CPU cores

Qualcomm's in the news once again after industry analyst Pan Juitang came up with informed predictions about its upcoming Snapdragon 830 processor. According to his intel, the chip is internally known as the MSM8998 (the SD820 is MSM8996), and differs from its predecessor in several key aspects.

Reportedly, the new chipset will be made on a more recent 10nm process, rather than the 14nm process used for fabricating the SD 820. It will also integrate an LTE Cat. 16 modem (the SD 820 features Cat. 12), and perhaps most notably – the SD 830 will get an octa-core CPU, double the amount of custom Kryo CPU cores over its predecessor. What a monster!

Mr. Juitang didn't estimate a release date for the chipset, although we suspect mobile device makers will be very interested in it around late 2016 and the first quarter of 2017. However, this year is more likely to meet the Snapdragon 823, a serious clock frequency upgrade over the 820. Reportedly, the 823 will run its CPU cores at speeds up to 2.8GHz, while the 820's ceiling is 2.2GHz.
