Doctor Strange: Mads Mikkelsen teases details of Marvel movie

The Marvel cinematic universe is about to get weird — so says Mads Mikkelsen, the Danish actor set to torment Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sorcerer Supreme in the upcoming Doctor Strange.

In a recent interview with Yahoo Movies UK, Mikkelsen said the adaptation of the far-out comic book about a neurosurgeon turned wizard will be “different from the other [Marvel] films that we’ve seen,” although “not as different as the books are, because that was basically the ’60s and ’70s — it was more like an acid trip.”

Stressing that Doctor Strange is set in “quite a specific universe, with kung fu and magic,” Mikkelsen added, “We’ve taken that fascination of the time into something we can relate to today. So you still have the energy, you still have the colors, you still have the madness, but you also have something you can identify with. … You have all the action, all the good ingredients you get in a Marvel film, but it will have a different flavor, that’s for sure.”

Mikkelsen’s comments echo those of his costar Cumberbatch, who previously told EW “there’s going to be crazy s‑‑- going on” in the Scott Derrickson-directed film.

In the Yahoo interview, Mikkelsen also discussed his approach to his character, a rival sorcerer to Doctor Strange who breaks off and forms his own sect.

“He’s not a villain in that way — he’s a man who believes in something else than the hero,” he said. “That doesn’t mean that he doesn’t want to make the planet look wonderful or he wants to save the world as well, but he has a different way of doing it. He is the antagonist, of course, but he’s not necessarily wrong.”
