Pokémon Go field test to finally begin stateside

Niantic Labs has opened up registration for a Pokémon Go field test in the United States. The game's official website now offers a link to pre-register for the download, which will be available to select participants at a later date.

Users who are invited to try out the app will be required to keep its content confidential, according to the website. They must also have an Android or iOS device to access the field test. Any progress made during the pre-release will be wiped before the full game comes out later this year. (In fact, it will be "wiped multiple times during the course of the field test" as well, according to Niantic.)

"Please note: the app is still in active development, so it has a limited set of features at the moment and there may be things that don't work properly," the development team wrote in a blog post. Some of these features were hinted at in March by Japanese users, who have already had the chance to test out the game.

Pokémon Go is an Ingress-style mobile game that encourages players to explore the real outdoors in order to catch a variety of Pokémon. The full, public release remains undated, but Niantic recently confirmed further details about the upcoming game. The developer first announced it was working with Nintendo on Pokémon Go last fall.
