Producer Brian Grazer Says He's Remaking 'Splash' But With A "Twist"

While everyone bemoans Hollywood‘s lack of imagination in their pursuit of franchises, remakes, and sequels, when the studios do offer up something original — like for instance, this weekend’s hysterical “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (or even “The Nice Guys” from a couple weeks back) — nobody shows up. So, who can blame producers for continuing to develop projects based on stuff audiences are already familiar with? And that’s just what Brian Grazer is doing, as he’s revealed he’s taking an ’80s classic and giving it a new spin.

Sitting down for an interview with CNBC, Grazer spilled that he’s got a remake of the Tom Hanks/Daryl Hannah mermaid romantic comedy “Splash” coming. And having come up with the story, and produced the original movie for his pal, director Ron Howard, Grazer seems eager to revisit the material.

“I’m actually doing ‘Splash,’ and I can’t say [anything more]. I’m actually going to do it from the point-of-view of…I can’t say anything about it. There’s a movie star that’s going to be involved, [but] I haven’t announced it,” he teased.

When pressed a bit more, Grazer says the movie will be a version of the original treatment, “Wet,” which was told from the mermaid’s point of view, adding, “but I can’t tell you the twist.”

So, who’s the movie star? What’s the twist? It seems like we might find out soon, and with Disney and Universal both working on their versions of “The Little Mermaid,” it looks like we’re about to enter an arms race of mermaid movies.
