“Brooklyn Nine-Nine” star Stephanie Beatriz has been cast as the lead in the independent drama “The Light of the Moon,” Variety has learned exclusively.
Shooting has started in Brooklyn and will run through the rest of the month. Jessica M. Thompson is directing from her own script.
The story follows a young New York City woman who is sexually assaulted by a stranger during an evening out with her friends. She attempts to keep the assault a secret, but the burden of the truth breaks down the trust and intimacy in her relationship with her long-term boyfriend. An encounter with an at-risk woman later forces her to face what has happened.
Michael Stahl-David (“LBJ,”), Conrad Ricamora (“How to Get Away With Murder”) and Catherine Curtin (“Orange Is the New Black”) will co-star.
Thompson is producing with Carlo Velayo of Stedfast Productions, Michael Cuomo (“Happy New Year”), Gigi Dement (“God of Love”) and Raymond K. Javdan (“Graceland”).
Beatriz has a recurring role in “Modern Family” and starred with Brie Larson in “Short Term 12.” She is repped by Don Buchwald & Associates.
