One of last year’s biggest sleeper hits was Taika Waititi’s acclaimed vampire mockumentary What We Do In the Shadows, which he co-wrote and directed with his frequent collaborator, Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement. The dark comedy not only earned him quite a bit of mainstream attention, but it also put him on Hollywood’s radar — resulting in Waititi being named the director of Marvel Studios’ upcoming Thor: Ragnarok.

While promoting his new film Hunt for the Wilderpeople at the Sundance Film Festival, Waititi revealed that his follow-up to What We Do In The Shadows already has an official title, and that the project will explore the daily life of another group of supernatural creatures that featured prominently in the 2015 film.

“Jemaine [Clement] and I are trying to write a werewolves spinoff,” Waititi told Crave Online during the festival. “It’s going to be called We’re Wolves, like ‘We are wolves.’ We’re Wolves.”

In the 2015 film, Waititi and Clement play vampire flatmates in New Zealand dealing with a variety of issues both mundane and supernatural that include sporadic encounters with a local group of werewolves led by Anton, a character played by Flight of the Conchords regular Rhys Darby. It’s uncertain whether Darby will reprise his role for the film, but given the frequency of collaborations between Waititi, Clement, and Darby, it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of Anton.

The recipient of an Oscar nomination for his 2004 short film Two Cars, One Night, Waititi also directed the highest-grossing film in New Zealand’s history, his 2010 coming-of-age comedy Boy.

Production on We’re Wolves is expected to begin after Waititi finishes work on Thor: Ragnarok, the third solo film in Marvel’s Thor franchise. Set to bring back Chris Hemsworth as the god of thunder and Mark Ruffalo as Hulk, Thor: Ragnarok is currently scheduled to hit theaters November 3, 2017.

According to Waititi, We’re Wolves will “most likely be the next thing” after Thor: Ragnarok.

The best movie and show trailers for the week of June 7
The cast of Alien: Romulus.

Some weeks are better than others for trailers. But the week of June 7 was wild, and the three major theatrical trailers released in that time span delivered thrilling previews for their respective movies. Some of the low-budget movie trailers of the week were less impressive, and that's why they didn't make the list.

Rounding out this week's selection of the best movie and show trailers are two Netflix previews. The first Netflix trailer looks like it could be another sleeper hit, while an animated trailer is giving us a peek at a video game adaptation that we've wanted to see done right for the last two decades.

The 50 best movies on Netflix right now (June 2024)
Glen Powell and Adria Arjona in Hit Man.

It's no secret that movies are struggling at the box office this summer, and yet this is also a week that makes us appreciate everything we get to see from the comfort of our own homes thanks to Netflix. If the addition of the Oscar-winning Godzilla Minus One weren't enough, Netflix also debuted a new original movie, Hit Man, which stars Glen Powell in the leading role.

That's a terrific one-two punch for this pair of the most popular movies on Netflix. By this time next week, there may be some random little-seen action flick on top of the list. But for now, having two great movies to watch on Netflix during the weekend brings a smile to our faces.

The best movies on Amazon Prime Video (June 2024)
The cast of Mean Girls.

Sometimes the best movies on Amazon Prime Video come from somewhere else. This week, Prime Video has become the new streaming home of Mean Girls, the remake of the popular film that Paramount Pictures released earlier this year. And in this case, Paramount+'s loss is Prime Video's gain, especially since Amazon still has several of Paramount's recent box office hits available to stream.

Additionally, one of our favorite James Bond movies, Skyfall, has made its return to Prime Video. This is a film that's come and gone from Prime Video many times before, but it's always worth watching 007 at his best.
