This conflict is also a great showcase for David Finch's storytelling abilities. Given his propensity for hulking figures and detailed environments, Finch was pretty much born to draw Batman comics. As exciting as it is to see Batman soaring through his city and riding a crashing airliner to certain doom, it's those environments that truly stand out in this issue. Finch pours immense amounts of detail into his buildings, right down to the individual bricks and windows. More than ever, Gotham feels like a living, breathing place under Finch's hand. It's also a treat to see Finch paired with a new colorist in the form of the amazingly prolific Jordie Bellaire. Bellaire bathes her pages in an orange glow that creates the sensation of a city plagued by heat and ready to explode into chaos. Compared to the often over-saturated quality of the art on Wonder Woman, Bellaire's muted approach is a great fit for Finch's pencils.

Verdict
This issue serves as a good, solid start for the new series, but not necessarily one that stands out as much as some of the best efforts from these early weeks of DC Rebirth. This issue hints at an interesting dynamic between Batman and the newest heroes who have emerged in Gotham, but time will tell on that front. It also remains to be seen how the dynamic between Bruce and Duke will play out and if Duke will truly grow into the unique sidekick he's being positioned as. But at least readers can rest assured knowing that Batman remains in capable hands.
