Starting Fallout 4’s Automatron Questline Is Easy

Fallout 4’s Automatron add-on allows people to build their own robot companions. Or, if they’d prefer, turn Codsworth into the biggest and baddest companion he can be. However, people might have trouble kicking off the quest.

To start, you need to be at level 15. If you are below that level, you won’t receive a prompt starting a Mechanical Menace quest. If you are, you’ll find a Caravan Distress Call in your Pipboy’s Radio. Listen to that, and it’ll direct you to Wattz Consumer Electronics to start the first quest, which will give you the Robot Workbench.

Wattz Consumer Electronics is incredibly close to the BADTFL Regional Office. You can see it in the image above, from my copy of Fallout 4. (Yes, I know I don’t have many in-city landmarks uncovered. I hate feral ghouls and try to take more rural routes.) It’s also not too far from the Cambridge Police Station, where the Brotherhood of Steel has a recon point, and Kendall Hospital. Fast traveling to any of those points will put you within easy walking distance of the location.

As an aside, before kicking off Fallout 4’s Automatron quests, I recommend starting The Silver Shroud sidequest. (You don’t need to complete it.) You can find it by listening to Silver Shroud Radio on your Pipboy when around Diamond City and Goodneighbor. Get far enough in the quest chain to get the Silver Shroud costume from Hubris Comics, and you should be fine. Wearing the outfit during portions of Automatron will result in some unique dialogue.

Fallout 4 and its Automatron DLC are immediately available for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows PC. I’ll be going over robot customization and other elements of this DLC over the next few days.
